Album Review

This Michigan group blends the smooth, lush vocals of cellist Allysa Massais and guitarist Andrew Prinz with pulsing, rhythmic percussive beats to create a colorful, textured and mature work that can only be in a sense dubbed rare musical genius. The lyrics of songwriting team Prinz and Massais feed off each other magically and with great melodic warmth, bringing to the listener the purest joy of harmony. Dynamics are certainly a large influence on this record, conveyed with strength and forwardness, to take the sound of the material to a more compelling stratosphere. The mixture of sound and words in this record from a production standpoint is high quality, and the playability is fine indeed. Even with a touch of beautifully arranged cello and rich, layered guitars, the spark and enthusiasm of the duet's vocals are subtle and serene, and do not lose their quiet but passionate appeal. A charming record of experimental indie rock, Mahogany has finally received their chance to create a gem of music after issuing several acclaimed EPs. The Dream of a Modern Day is inventive, introspective, and quite compelling and is a must-have for fans of this genre. Look out for more of this band, for their future endeavor's are bright and possibilities plenty. ~ Shawn M. Haney, Rovi

One of the lost classics of Shoegaze

As lush, beautiful and haunting as the best of the genre. Mahaogony came along years after the prime years of this movement, but deserve to be up there right along Slowdive. "Optismism" is just one of my favorite songs, in any music.
