Album Review

On the debut album from New York New School vocalist Jose James, he makes a move toward a new era of jazz vocals. While jazz elements have been making their way into underground hip-hop for years, James turns the other direction. He sings contemporary jazz with a strong sense of respect for the classics, but quietly puts hip-hop instrumentation behind his vocals, and multi-tracks himself for accentuation. James is in the midst of creating an entirely modern approach to jazz singing here over a set of originals with a few covers thrown in (the highlight being Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Spirits Up Above"). A Japanese release adds the classics "Body and Soul" and "Moanin'."

He Defines The Phrase "Real Jazz"

Sir Jose’ your music sounds so timeless & classic. When I hear you it’s as if I’ve step back in time when legends were still growing such as Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra. Your lyrics remind me of Stevie Wonder. Their light, plain & simply but they mean so much & that’s stays in peoples hearts. Sometime less is more and that’s what you are. More than average, more than A+, more than great, more than yourself. Your song “Velvet” is so out of this world. It’s as if one of the jazz greats from the 60’s left behind a time capsule for the world to remember what “real” music is. Thank you for sharing your craft with the world. We need artist like you.

Great Jazz Vocalist!!!

I am VERY happy to hear the cover of "Nola". Job well done!!!

Sumptuously Soulful Serenade

This cd is incredible! Jose James has an amazingly warm and inviting singing voice. It has this raspy yet pure quality that is simultaneously vulnerable and strong. It works as another instrument in the tight band they've place beside him on this cd. I say beside him because the musicians can hardly be called backup. Their voices are heard loud and clear through their instruments. I love this cd. Thank you KCRW for always exposing artist to the world that are often over looked by mainstream (boring) radio.

Biography

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Often referred to as a jazz singer for the hip-hop generation, New York City-based vocalist José James combines jazz, soul, drum'n'bass, and spoken word into his own unique brand of vocal jazz. While he states his main influences as John Coltrane, Marvin Gaye, and Billie Holiday, his sound on early 12" singles and in live performances brought to mind such icons of '70s jazz-soul as Terry Callier, and his music felt more like an update of the fluid crossover approach of Gil Scott-Heron, while also...
