Album Review
Inevitably, music will have leaders as well as followers, and both have their place. It's unrealistic and foolish to think that every artist who comes along should be a trendsetter; people who shake things up as intensely as Charlie Parker, the Sex Pistols, John Coltrane, the Beatles, or Nirvana are the exception instead of the rule. But when someone does come up with something that is truly fresh, he/she deserves applause — and there is plenty of freshness on this self-titled CD by the Dresden Dolls, a Boston-based duo that successfully blends alternative pop/rock with German cabaret. Lead singer Amanda Palmer brings an unlikely combination of influences to this release, and they range from Kurt Weill and Marlene Dietrich to goth rock, punk, and the riot grrrl movement. Palmer has been greatly affected by the emotional catharsis of PJ Harvey, Courtney Love, and Tori Amos — her performances can be very stream-of-consciousness — but she has also been influenced by the cabaret of Germany's pre-Adolf Hitler Weimar Republic (although Palmer writes and sings in English exclusively on this album). Hitler, a fanatically extreme social conservative, detested the flamboyant, sexualized imagery of the Weimar-era cabaret culture and did everything he could to eradicate it. But when Marlene Dietrich and others fled Nazi Germany, they took their cabaret with them — and that Weimar-era influence is all over this intriguing CD. Not only has it affected Palmer's darkly theatrical melodies, but also, Palmer and drummer Brian Viglione (the Dresden Dolls' other half) sport a look that is part goth and part Weimar-era burlesque. And much to their credit, the Dresden Dolls make their unorthodox alt-rock/cabaret blend sound perfectly natural rather than forced. This CD is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who is seeking something fresh from alternative pop/rock.

Punk Cabaret Really Is Freedom
This band is just incredible. Amanda Palmer's lyrics are raw and soul-wrenching, her masculine and strong voice manuevering the words to perfection. Brian Viglione's drumming is solid and deep, and he's almost better than Spencer Smith. Together, they managed to create a hit album, "Girl Anachronism", "Coin-Operated Boy," "Gravity", "Bad Habit", "The Jeep Song", and "Truce", are particularly great. This band is unlike anything you've ever heard. I suggest you purchase it.
Bipolar Fun
If you're leery of the unconventional, possess no sense of humor and no appreciation for the bizarre, or like your boys to sound like girls but never the other way around, don't buy this album. If you're looking for something new and compelling, and have no qualms with any of the above: GO FOR IT. The quality of the sound itself is a little rough, "as though they recorded it in their living room," as someone I know has said, but with the engery and enthusiasm Amanda Palmer and Brian Viglione put into it, it evens out. They go from manic highs--"Girl Anachronism," most notably--to surprisingly low lows--"Missed Me," to an extent, or "The Jeep Song," and, of course, Amanda's voice in general--and it's one heck of a ride. Every song is worth listening to at least once, and while they can be hard to decipher, every lyric is worth reading. They're a little addictive, and a little habit-forming, and it's very easy to suddenly find yourself a fan after years of only vaguely knowing about oh yeah, those Doll people. Give them a shot; you may end up being glad for it. (However, you should most definitely not listen to the Dresden Dolls when: looking for something mellow and soothing, you have a headache or are tired or mentally distressed, or if you have trouble discerning humor and/or are prone to taking things literally. There's an edge of dark humor in the lot of the songs, or so I've interpreted them--especially "Bad Habit," which is arguably the most controversial song on this album, but one of my favorites nonetheless. There is an element of shock value present--don't be scared off by it.)
Anything but Ordinary
If you are looking for something completely original, no pop, no screaming emo boys, and definitly nothing you've heard on the radio then definitly check out the dresden dolls. This cd is so inspirational and Amanda Palmer's lyrics and mad piano skills will hypnotize you. If you can as well check out their music videos for "girl anachronism" and "coin operated boy". I've been a fan since early 2004 and still never get tired of them.
