Customer Reviews
Best Recording of the Best Star Wars
For years an acceptable recording of The Empire Strikes Back was yet to be found, but in 1992 Varese (who is very acclaimed by film score anthusists and film fans alike) released one of the greatest re-recorded adaptations of a score. The sound as on all Varese albums is crisp and clear unlike the original release on Polydor in the 80's. The concert works are fresh and make this recording more enjoyable because of it's more thematic value than other releases. Han Solo & The Princess is probably the highlight of the album because of its superb performance and arrangement. But all around a great album and peformance rivals that of original!
Good and Bad
The recording quality of this adaptation of the "Empire" score is much better than the original soundtrack Polydor release, however the skill level of the orchestra is noticeably lacking in comparison to the London Symphony Orchestra, especially on the more difficult cues like "Battle in the Snow". The brass in particular have intonation problems and the trumpets flat-out miss a few of the higher notes. A pity they can't combine the crisp, clear recording quality of this album with the skill and musicianship of the original soundtrack.
Too bad the tracks are all locked together...
...otherwise I'd be buying a couple of them. I hate how iTunes does this to certain albums. I have several recordings of the Star Wars films's soundtracks, but the samples to *this* version of Empire sound the best. Unfortunatly for me, I can't buy the two or three that I want here, and I'm not going to buy the whole album--otherwise, I'd give this four stars instead of three.
