Album Review
By fusing the best elements of American metalcore and European melodic death metal (i.e., the Gothenburg school), Massachusetts' Killswitch Engage achieved what hundreds of nu-metal bands only dreamed of: supplying American heavy metal with a viable facelift with which to set itself to rights in the new millennium. The fact that in order to do this they relied on songs with actual substance, not fabricated image or false pretense, goes to the heart of 2002's stunning Alive or Just Breathing's success, as well as its masterful successor, 2004's much anticipated The End of Heartache. Indeed, little has changed from one album to the next, which can be viewed as a positive or a negative, depending on the listener. But with distinctive songwriting and that delicate but explosive dynamic balance between melody and abrasiveness still readily on display in pace-setting openers "A Bid Farewell" and "Take This Oath," the former seems more likely. Track number three, the excellent "When Darkness Falls," is where Killswitch will convince most lingering cynics, and the ensuing "Rose of Sharyn" is arguably the group's most accessible single yet (and also possibly a bone of contention for fans of their harder stuff). Next up, the mild-mannered interlude "Inhale" is actually a warning for the breathtaking power riffing of "Breathe Life," after which the all-encompassing title track really hammers one out of the ballpark. And so it goes; as riff upon riff are piled sky-high into each number that follows, it's the unpredictable rhythmic shifts used to build and then relieve internal pressure that fuel the Killswitch Engage power source. On a side note, much has been made of the replacement of former vocalist Jesse David Leach with relative newcomer Howard Jones (relative being the operative word since he toured with the band for two years prior to this recording), but, to be perfectly honest, the differences between them are totally negligible. Jones effortlessly matches his predecessor's talent for both clean singing and hardcore-style screaming, and additional highlights such as "World Ablaze" and the pulverizing "Wasted Sacrifice" prove his voice to be the perfect complement to his bandmates' technical proficiency. As mentioned previously, The End of Heartache only errs for making very few attempts to expand Killswitch Engage's general formula, good though it may be — but there's always a next time. And as the saying goes, too much of a good thing is rarely a bad thing.
Customer Reviews
The standout metal band of the 21st century.
Way back when, before i knew exactly what heavy metal was, i listened to more soft rock, always of the mind that metal was too intense, nothing but noise, and nothing unique. killswitch engage was the band that smacked me in the face for ever thinking that. killswitch is, in my opinion, the leader of metal of the 21st century. deep, dark lyrics, vocals that entail rage-induced screaming and beautiful, melodic singing with multiple pitches. the greatest guitar work of today. awesome percussion, excellent bass work, and ultimately, pure, raw, and astonishing musicianship. do not miss this album for anything. there is no standout hit single on the album. none. theres a best, but it's not the only classic, and there surely isn't a worst. every song on here is unique and stands out as an absolute masterpiece. i'll evaluate them all individually, but just know that they are all timeless classics, and if you are a fan of metal, or you just like good music for that matter, every song deserves your undivided attention. A Bid Farewell: a great track to kick off the album. very dark and moody, but then with a dramatic change for the chorus. it's odd, but in a great way. from the opening scream to the last note of the song, this is one awesome roller coaster ride into an incredible list of tracks. seriously, this song freaking rocks. 5/5 Take This Oath: the phrase is mentioned on the band's site when joining the fan club, and with good reason-it's not just an appropriate use of the phrase "take this oath", this song is awesome, and should definitely get lots of attention. very impressive. the chorus sticks in your head though, and the song seems very emotional and powerful, so be careful not to get it stuck in your head. but i wouldn't mind because this song is awesome. 5/5 When Darkness Falls: oh yeah! the very first killswitch song i heard, and i'm glad it was. this could be one of the most heavy songs on the album, and it could also be one of the most melodic, so it definitely defines KSE. brutal in it's lyrics, melody, mood and atmosphere, this song is an absolute must-have. howard never ceases to impress with vocals, but in this song, his voice truly proves that HE IS THE BEST VOCALIST IN ANY HARDCORE HEAVY METAL BAND. and that's not an overstatement. 5/5 Rose of Sharyn: probably the saddest killswitch song i know, but it's also fast and just as heavy as the others. i love howard's singing in this song, especially in the chorus, the bridge and the closing. it's simply incredible. you can't miss this song because it's one of the most unique on the album. absolutely fantastic. 5/5 Inhale: i thought it was kind of random at first, but then i realized how well placed it is on the album. a perfect track to place after "Rose of Sharyn." beautiful, but it's not mind blowing. don't download it by itself, but if you're listening to the whole album through, it's perfectly placed. good job, killswitch. 4/5. Breathe Life: once again, this flows well with the rest of the LP. melodic in the chorus, savagely heavy in the verses, this is just as awesome as any other killswitch song. however, it might be viewed as a filler track. still, it's an awesome song that deserves just as much attention as all the other songs on the album. 4.5/5 The End of Heartache: from the first clash of drums at the beginning, to the beautiful vocals, to the sounds of the bass roaring in your ears through the verses, to the world that the guitar takes you to when Dutkiewicz plays the most beautiful chords you will ever hear, this song is simply the metal anthem of a lifetime. when played live, it's so intense and astonishing you'll get goosebumps, and you may even cry to the sound of the crowd roaring in your ears as howard sings the chorus. words cannot describe how outstanding this song is. you simply have to listen to it. i have gone to sleep to it, worked out to it, and no matter what i'm doing, this song is always absolutely incredible. 10,000/5. Declaration: not even disappointing after hearing "The End of Heartache". the heavy intro is freaking awesome, and displays killswitch's ability to use creative rhythms in their songs, and do strange things with time signatures. short, but a great song nonetheless. 5/5 World Ablaze: this song is freaking VICIOUS. very, VERY heavy in the beginning, and for five minutes the song continues to beat the life out of you with intense drums, dark melodies, and vocals that could make your mother throw up, but make a metal fan break down in tears in astonishment. howard blew my mind with both screaming and singing on this track, and every member of the band destroyed worlds with his instrument. i guarantee that when i see killswitch live, i'll be found moshing to this song. 5/5 And Embers Rise: Wow. this song is 1 minute and 11 seconds of pure beauty. it's just like "inhale" in that it flows well with the album, and takes you to another world with the musicianship. upon hearing this song, you'll close your eyes and feel as if you're in paradise. mysterious, but absolutely heavenly. god dang, this song is an amazing transition. 4.5/5 Wasted Sacrifice: this is just as intense a roller coaster ride as any other. a great track to begin the end, this song is recommended for those who enjoyed "When Darkness Falls" or "World Ablaze." intense and always changing, this song is both unique and freakin awesome. 5/5 Hope Is...: an absolutely incredible finisher, and apporpriately named, because the power of the song and the sound of the band shouting will give you a sense of strength and hope. perfect for uplifting someone, this song will be awesome performed live, and brings a sense of brotherhood with it unlike any other, which makes it the perfect song to close the album. amazing. 5/5 any metal fan cannot miss this CD. and even after all of these years of exploring metal, i'll never forget this as my first full, true metal album. thank you killswitch. i'll not soon forget you.
BALLS!
This album is heavier than John goodman. Buy it.
This album is great
This is one of the most talented bands out there. Howard Jones can scream and sing so dang good it makes me sick. The guitars have sick riffs, and the drummer is of course amazing. The melodies are moving and the heavier parts make you want to either punch someone or get punched yourself. Rose of Sharyn is my favorite song. Also, to the idiot who said that this album only deserves one star, you have the worst musical taste on the planet! You are an idiot and I fart in your general direction! Eagles ain't got nothing on this! Go worship Satan at your Hotel California!
