iTunes Review

Battling with alcoholism and trying to establish his footing in the changing rock landscape of the ‘80s and MTV, Warren Zevon handed in The Envoy, a thoughtful and literate collection of tunes that continued to show the author’s masterful hand. The title track is disturbingly still relevant as it sketches out world tensions in the Middle East amongst its totalitarian synthesizers and unforgiving rhythm. “Charlie’s Medicine” eulogizes his old drug pusher. Best are “The Hula Hula Boys,” a smirking look at a Hawaiian vacation that goes all wrong (“I saw her leave the luau with the one who parked the cars”), “Jesus Mentioned,” an acoustic meditative ballad reflecting on the death of Elvis Presley, and “Looking for the Next Best Thing,” an irresistibly catchy rocker about settling for less that begs to be taken onto the highway. The 2007 reissue includes four outtakes: a sloppy, informal stab at the Troggs’ “Wild Thing,” a spy-thriller instrumental “Word of Mouth,” an alternate take of “Let Nothing Come Between You” with altered lyrics, and “The Risk,” a calm, even-handed look at fate.

My favorite original Warren Release.

Whether it's the searing Waddy Watchel lead guitar on songs like Charlie's Medicine, or Warren's vocal sincerity on songs like Hula Hula Boys or Jesus Mentioned, this is one for your collection. When Rhino finally released this a few year's back, so many of us were very glad. This edition has plenty of extras from the hard to find "the Risk", an outtake from these sessions, to a zany crazy wasted sounding version of "Wild Thing". The Envoy, the title track is still as politcally relevant today as it was back in the day, early 80's, when Warren penned it. The variety of tunes from this release Warren never again accomplished. It's almost a concept album of sorts. Politics, drugs, women, more drugs and crazy times, and all of it teathered with perhaps Warren's greatest love song ever, "Let nothing come between you".

One of the most acute and savagely satiric songwriters of his era, Warren Zevon was born in Chicago on January 24, 1947. His formative years were as colorful as the scenarios played out in his music: his father was a professional gambler, a lifestyle which forced the family to move frequently, and Zevon spent most of his formative years in California and Arizona. He learned to play piano, focusing primarily on classical material before a disintegrating home life led him into pop music, as well as...
