Album Review

Darkest Hour keep the pedal to the metal on their sixth album. There are no stylistic leaps here, just refinements of the band's impressive technique. The time they spent opening the previous year's At the Gates reunion/farewell tour has clearly affected their songwriting and delivery, as vocalist John Henry's raw-throated roar owes more to Tomas Lindberg than ever. Meanwhile, guitarists Mike Schleibaum and Mike Carrigan carve riffs out of stone and split the sky with lightning-fast solos that blur the line between thrash and prog. The rhythm section keeps it all moving, drummer Ryan Parrish beating the kit right through the floor; bassist Paul Burnette, unfortunately, disappears into the mix — except for an impressive break on "Bitter." Darkest Hour's D.C. hardcore roots emerge on that 80-second tirade, which compresses all the strengths of their more traditional-length songs into a lightning-fast barrage. Just about every other song here, though, features a hooky riff and a memorable — if not "catchy" in the traditional pop chart sense — chorus. These are songs destined to be shouted along with as fists pump in the pit. Combine that with the totally air-guitar-worthy solos, and you've got a very solid metalcore/melodic death metal album. This is what Darkest Hour have always done very well (let "always" = "since Hidden Hands of a Sadist Nation"), and they show no signs of slowing down or slackening on The Eternal Return.

An Amazing Triumph

First, im a Darkest hour fan through and through, they could do any remake of any song out there and i would eat it up, the energy that john's vox bring to every song make it almost painfull to listen too, mike and lonestar managed to pick up the pieces and while many so called fans would be dissapointed in kris's departure i think it gave mike room to take center stage as a great guitarist himself, the sweeps in the solo for "The tides" were almost all shall perish worthy overall i think the new sound and mastering is a reflection of how the band has matured into a sound that is indeed all there own, i waited 2 months counting the days till this CD came out, and at first i was a bit dissapointed to be honest i didnt hear alot of the DH staples i had come to expect but then after listening the CD began to bring a new sound out of the band its a sort of growing up its the return of an eternal insperation and in my opinion there best album to date, now for the review

-Devolution Of Flesh. i cant belive how well John wrote the lyrics to this brutally anthemic cry for an uprising againt the very people who hold themselves to be "holy" all the while they decay...You're a plague 10/10

-Death Worship. a truly epic story of how people seek there own death only to fear it when they find it truly epic drum work and riffage 8/10

-The Tides. arguably the most driving and brutal form of Thrash i have ever heard. johns lyrics again amaze me while the guitar work and drums stand out all on their own aswell, the solo is enough reason for me to buy this whole album 10/10

-No God. not unfamiliar territory for these guys as far as themes go, most of hidden hands was a blast on religion, reffering of course to messiah complex and for the soul of the savior, so when i saw this song on the cd i had high hopes and i was only mildly dissapointed in teh bland beginning riff, but at 0:59 it became apparent that they had returned to the amazing thrash they started with in 7/10

-Bitter. Fast brutal and angry the blast beat vox and riffs make this one of the most epic songs on the CD in despite of its length 8/10

-Blessed infection. the opening reminded me alot of accesible losses and thats a good thing because when the riff/drums drop in and you hear the first brutal seconds before it kicks in at 0:33 it seems like a return of all the things DH has come to do well. lyircally charged and johns vocals only make it better 10/10

-Transcendence. few word can describe the awesome brutality of this song and the deep meaning of the chorus
definately a song only DH could pull off 10/10

-A Distorted Utopia. the beginning seems rushed but the rest of the song makes up for the urgency and the hits of an old school metal breakdown int he beginning give it a very charged mood right before the chorus kicks in and all hell breaks loose, awesome song 8/10

-Black sun. didnt stand out very much untill i really gave it a good listen and started hearing the underlying melody and groove that it exemplifies and as usuall Johns vox are amazing even though they seem a little overpowered on this one, still good song though 7/10

-Into the grey. its like they took "with a thousand words to say but one" and "doomsayer" and "This side of the nightmare" and "Sadist nation" and turned all of those themes into the perfect song. 1:45 when you hear the distant wail ad the drums and bass drop into the groove before ripping your face right back off at 2:03 but the best part of the entire song is the last 10 seconds with what i think is the most awesome thing DH has ever done with and outro. 200000/10

awesome CD keep kicking a*s fellas

This albums sick..

Awesome guitar work. Yeah Kris Norris left and he was a badass but DH's still got it. Kris was a money hungry sellout that's why he got kicked out. This is a great album!
