Album Review

Depending on your point of view, The Find is either an album whose ideology and overall vibe are stuck in the '90s or a new-millennium hip-hop album that bears influence of the foundation while providing an updated spin from a talented artist. The latter sentiment is most accurate. Producer/MC Ohmega Watts and a host (and that means host) of friends make The Find a worthwhile listen for any hip-hop fan. With Watts in control, he takes obvious nods to iconic producers (Pete Rock, Diamond D — he rhymes similar to Large Professor) and the sound of hip-hop's '90s renaissance, while rearranging it in his own distinct way. The six-minute "A Request" is an updated '90s head-nodder with a two-minute rideout that appropriates everything from Souls of Mischief to Gang Starr, with some timpani/cowbell percussion to boot. Ohmega lays down a gritty, strutting groove for "Full Swing" as MCs Neogen and Deacon join him on the mike for an old-fashioned cipher. But even in the midst of a staple track like this, Ohmega manages to finds about 20 seconds in the middle of the tune to do some electronic space traveling. Watts also shows himself a capable and diverse producer, venturing outside the realm of the hip-hop idiom. "Your Love" is a hip-hop/soul vehicle for singer Tiffany Johnson, while "Treasure Hunt" (featuring Sugar Candy) is straight-up authentic dancehall-style reggae. The electric guitar shredding through "Groovin' on Sunshine" highlights one of his several largely instrumental tracks. The Find is very close to a perfect creative balance between exploration and traditionalism, and an impressive debut from a hip-hop commodity.

"The find" indeed

I first heard this one night listening to the radio; it was Long Ago and I was like "Oh man! It's The Roots! Or is it?" Fantastic track: the production was vibe-a-licious and the way Ohmega and Othello nimbly traded rhymes and sentences was fantastic and reminiscent of Black Star. Turned it was this guy out of Portland called Ohmega Watts. Not three days afterward I went to Best Buy and picked it up. This is an excellent album, great for a chillout session or just some background at a gathering or something. Great rhymes, conscious and positive themes (what's wrong with a little good clean fun?), free spirited production, and varied musical styles elevate this album over many of its peers. My only complaints would be the over-abundance of guest artists (it makes this feel like a mix-album rather than a solo project) and how the album sprawls; 22 tracks and 71 minutes makes it hard to find time to sit down and listen to the whole thing. There's no shame, however, in cherry picking the best tracks. Highly recommended for hip-hop fans all over.

QUEST to FIND some REAL hip hop

Ok, at 35 yrs old I've been in the game since '83 and I've been on a ATC-QUEST to FIND some REAL hip hop like brotha Ohmega Watts delivers here. If you're like me, and you dig the 90's Hip Hop Renaissance sound of De La, Tribe, Diamond D, etc., then you’ll dig this cat, Ohmega Watts. I don’t know if he’s Omega Psi Phi, but this is the ish that keeps Hip Hop alive in the 2005!

Vibes!

Though there isn't a single song I think that stands out, the entire album really creates a mood. Layed back, smooth, jazzy, exactly the kind of thing you get from ATCQ. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because I feel there are some parts which could've been done better. For example, the constant switching back and forth between Watts and Othello on the song Long Ago is really unnatractive. However, good album overall. Keep real hip-hop alive!
