iTunes Review

Montreal’s Stars resonate incandescently on its fifth album, The Five Ghosts. Several of the musicians have doubled as affiliates of Broken Social Scene, but the focus was clearly on Stars’ material during this album’s creation — the band collaborated on songwriting more closely than ever and reunited with Tom McFall, the producer behind 2005’s Set Yourself On Fire. The result is a beautiful, cohesive collection that includes thematically titled songs — such as “Dead Hearts” and “I Died So I Could Haunt You” — and musically runs the gamut from gorgeous chill-wave ballads (“Changes”) to synth-spiked, indie-pop dance floor magnets (“We Don’t Want Your Body”). The tender, high-register harmonies of vocalists Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan are stunning throughout. The album also includes The Seance – a bonus EP featuring electronica-leaning remixes, including one by Of Montreal and another by the Album Leaf (“Opinions vs. the Sun”) that applies the California band’s trademark glitchy-yet-smooth drum programming for an icy cool track.

Everyone needs to get real.

If you think this is their best album, you haven't listened to the rest of their discography in detail. The album takes a hard nosedive at track 9 and never recovers [not including The Seance tracks], if you ask me.

That being said, the CD as a whole is still good, and it would certainly be difficult for Stars to create something awful. "Dead Hearts" is a strong opener, "Wasted Daylight" sets a warm, cozy scene [Postal Service-ish anyone?], "I Died So I Could Haunt You" has a particularly pretty ending, "Fixed" is the true highlight [love that part where Amy sings "is it your fault?"], and then the next few tracks are pretty good as well. If you're new to Stars with this album, please listen to their older stuff too, particularly Set Yourself on Fire. You'll be even more impressed.

magic.

When I got an email that this album was ready for download, I was obviously excited. It started to download. I clicked play.

And I was blown away.

I've been a crazy avid Stars fan since Nightsongs, and I've been relatively happy as to their progression as a band, but they've never released music of this quality in all their years. It's unprecedented. It doesn't even seem fair to call it music.

It's magic.

If your a Stars fan returning, or if you're looking to download some lyrically brilliant, rhythmically excellent, emotionally captivating genius, then look no further. Click "Buy Now."

Wow......Just Wow.

The Stars just keep getting better and better. Watching them continue to grow as a group is pretty inspiring as a music fan. If you like ANY of their previous stuff, buy the album. It's well worth the price. If anyone is looking for some suggestions listen to "You Do It to Me and I Do It to You Too", "The Last Song Ever Written", "Winter Bones" and "Dead Hearts".
