Album Review

The Verve Pipe made their major-label debut under the direction of producer Jerry Harrison with Villains, recasting themselves in the inauspicious mold of a post-grunge act. On an initial listen, the album does little to distinguish itself from the masses, though patient revisiting reveals a band of more depth, with Brian Vander Ark's songwriting improving vastly over previous albums and more subtle aspects, like the tasteful organic keyboard arrangements, actually adding texture and dimension to the sound. The band seemed to acknowledge the misstep by re-recording (yet again) "The Freshmen" for single release and subsequent pressings, which ultimately earned them their first national hit.

Meandering Down Amnesia Lane...

Pawing through some iTunes links of related songs, I tripped across this album. I'd forgotten this band even existed, yet was struck by how well I recalled the lyrics to some of these songs, and the strong emotions accompanying them. I'm admittedly not a fan of the band, but I know what I like and this is a really good album on it's own merit. Freshman is the "hook" song, but there are some real gems if you give it a few listens to let it grow on you. Veneer is the perfect end, and also my favorite- liquid lyrics and rolling melodics lull your soul at the end of a roller-coaster ride you will want to go on again and again.

worth it for "the freshmen"

ahh this album brings back so many memories. "the freshmen" alone gets me every time. skott freedman is this amazing singer-songwriter who covered "the freshmen" a few years ago (i think it's on itunes) that is just chilling. if you haven't heard it HIGHLY recommended.

The Freshman.

Okay, so I was obsessed with the song, The Freshmen. I realized that maybe since the song had potential, I could check out the rest of the album, but, they aren't quite "I-can't-stop-listening-to-this-album." I mean, I know they could be HUGE, because this band does have great talent. Try harder, 3 stars for the great effort and The Freshmen. :)
