Album Review

Produced by Calvin Johnson, The Fruit That Ate Itself possesses a leaner and meaner sound than earlier Modest Mouse releases — the emphasis here is less on noise than groove, and the spare, edgy approach of cuts like "Dirty Fingernails" and the title track recalls the goofy indie-funk of Dub Narcotic Sound System and other likeminded Johnson-helmed projects.

Dirty Fingernails!!!!!

The Fruit That Ate Itself is the third EP released by indie rock band Modest Mouse in 1997. The album was recorded at Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios. Originally, the session was planned to record a 7" release, but it soon expanded into an EP. The track "Dirty Fingernails" also appears on Yoyo A Go Go, a compilation album released by Yoyo Records. Upon its release, the band expressed some embarrassment with the marginal nature of some of the tracks in an interview in The Rocket, joking that Calvin Johnson would start recording every time they jingled their keys. The album features several experimental interludes, consisting of music reversed in post-production. Too bad you cant buy the digital booklet alone : ( DAMN YOU ITUNES

I don't understand

A lot of hardcore MM fans say that We Were Dead is too lighthearted and inoffensive and that their older stuff was better. Well, this EP consists of the following:
Three tracks that are just thirty second distorted versions of three other tracks (Sunspots, Waydown, Fruit)
A funny story about a car breaking down (Karma's Payment)
A song about a really fun summer (Summer)
A song that I'm fairly sure makes no sense whatsoever (Sunspots in the House of the Late Scapegoat)
A song whose lyrics sound like political satire but the tune sounds like a really cool attempt at rap (The Fruit that Ate Itself)
Only the Waydown sounds like a normal Modest Mouse song. And I think there's one I'm forgetting, but it's lost on me. Point is, I think MM has been trying to be hip and cool way before We Were Dead, but only with We Were Dead were they successful, because they had enough money to make it sound like that. Which is why they had punky sort of albums like Lonesome Crowded West and The Moon And Antarctica, which are considered by these fans to be their best work. Hmm. Awesome EP by the way. I played "The Fruit That Ate Itself" for all my friends. They couldn't stand it. They're just not used to Isaac's voice.

A Discontinued Rarity!

It's a real collector's item in it's pure form and it shows Modest Mouse's early work and sound.
I searched High and Low for this Album through out my town at the cd exchange place, but no copies were to be found. I ended up buying a brand new copy off the internet from a seller in Massachusetts for $60 dollars!!!! I'm baffled that it took so long for itunes to bring up Modest Mouse's best work, but in the end I'm glad that Itunes came to it's senses.

The Fruit that Ate Itself is a Rarity and it possesses Modest Mouse's Early known sound of 1997 and is by far not to ever disappoint ever.
