iTunes Review
Recorded primarily live in ten days at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, pianist Gabe Dixon’s self-titled 2008 collection is hardly a roughshod, raw performance. Dixon’s a born perfectionist whose first takes are delivered with greater polish than other performer’s labored recordings. “Five More Hours” has a classic FM radio highway feel. “Further the Sky,” featuring a guest vocal from Mindy Smith, sports a haunting 1970s electric piano that recalls the melancholy stamp of Paul Simon and eventually swells with a regal organ piping through. “All Will Be Well” has an amiable pop bounce to it. Dixon wrote alone and in collaboration with Semisonic singer Dan Wilson (co-writer of the Grammy-winning Dixie Chicks song “Not Ready To Make Nice” among his credentials) and Nashville songwriter Tia Sellers. Dixon’s comfortable singing folk, pop, blues, and soul with equal conviction. His natural tone is clear but he can channel the grit when necessary. The shuffles of “Till You’re Gone” and “Far From Home” recall the floating euphoria of Stevie Winwood’s lite R&B. Not bad for a minimalist trio.
Customer Reviews
Brilliantly crafted songs from a criminally underappreciated band.
What a superb collection of songs from one of the most inexplicably underappreciated bands I know. I can't figure out why more people don't know about these guys and I can only hope that this album will attract the notice that it deserves. This is a band that NEEDS to be heard. The songs on this album are so expertly written and performed; they are comprised of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard and lyrics that actually have depth and meaning, in a time when most pop-rock music is inundated with recycled, trite concepts and tired cliches. GDB's music has always sounded timeless to me: the songs stand on their own, independent of any transitory trend that happens to be flooding the airwaves at the moment. They already sound like classics. On slow songs like "All Will Be Well" and "Further the Sky," Gabe's voice is like a soothing balm to the troubled soul. His lyrics are full of pathos, empathy, and insight. I can't think of a song that offers more comfort and conveys more heartfelt emotion than "All Will Be Well," which assures the listener that "all will be well, even after all the promises you've broken to yourself." On top of all this, Gabe is an amazing pianist, as he demonstrates on every track on this album - from the phenomenal solo in "Till You're Gone" to the insanely catchy riffs of "Far From Home" to the gorgeous melodies of "And the World Turned" and "Ever After You." I love that the piano is the centerpiece of each song, and Gabe's playing establishes the mood and complements his voice perfectly. He truly has a gift for communicating just as much emotion through his playing as he does through his singing. So in short, you've got Gabe's beautiful, emotive voice, deft piano playing, and catchy melodies... and all of these elements make for a pure joy to the ears. All of these songs are so exceptional, I can't pick a favorite or even a few favorites. But if I had to pick one song to single out, it would be "Baby Doll," because it is perhaps the sweetest, most endearing song I've ever heard, conveying the tenderest affection without sounding saccharine or trite. Honestly though, there is not a single weak song in the bunch, so buy this album in its entirety - you won't regret it.
An Instant Classic!
An amazing collection of songs by Gabe Dixon & his über-talented band! I have read superlatives comparing Gabe to Jackson Browne and early Elton John, but this piano-rock trio also recalls the passion and power of bands like The Waterboys, Hothouse Flowers, Coldplay & The Fray. The album embeds vividly detailed, intensely personal and universally relatable songs in elegant yet muscular settings that draw, unabashedly and expertly, on classic rock, and the combination is intoxicating. "Disappear” is a panoramic song of escape and redemption, "Five More Hours” is a roots road song with an expansive arrangement redolent of Elton John’s Tumbleweed Connection, "Further the Sky" a stunning "Taoist" ballad sung with Mindy Smith, "All Will Be Well" is completely life-affirming, and "Till You're Gone" a rollicking bar room blaster. Three of the songs were co-written by onetime Semisonic frontman Dan Wilson, whose co-write of the Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice” earned him a Grammy for Song Of The Year. The album also features co-writes with two other Grammy Song Of The Year winners - Tia Sillers (Lee Ann Womack’s “I Hope You Dance”) & Wayne Kirkpatrick (Eric Clapton's "Change The World") All I can say is listen and be moved! This is what music should be about.
Very cool, very real stuff
I saw Gabe Dixon at a show at Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles about a week ago. There has been some early buzz about him since this album was previewed in Paste Magazine calling it one of the best records of the year. Tall order, I thought. His live show absolutely blew me away. Song after song he just kept getting better. I am usually hard to move but I found myself almost instantly hooked. I bought the album as soon as I could today and I've listened to it near non stop. The songs are all really well written and timeless in appeal but very freshly executed. If you like Coldplay and deep, melodic stuff like Oasis or Keane, you'll love Disappear and And The World Turned. If you dig early Elton John check out All Will Be Well or Sirens. If you secretly love Billy Joel's classic stuff Five More Hours for you. Fleeting, beautiful, timeless love songs are Ever After You and Far From Home. I love both of them. And for a super rollicking good bar band swagger beer drinking couple of tunes I suggest Till You're Gone (super catchy!!) and Find My Way Back Home. This record will run you through the gamut of musical emotions hitting everything you'd want from a complete album, great songs, super musicality, fantastic lyrics, toe tapping good pop with jazz inflected execution for a timeless musical expression. This one will be an instant classic. I hope people find out about it. Buy it and tell a friend... save the world from musical doom and gloam!
