Album Review
The Gay Parade is indie pop's very own Sgt. Pepper, a richly detailed, grandly ambitious concept record which forgoes the ponderous pretensions the phrase implies to instead exult in the simple joys of everyday life. Kevin Barnes' songs radiate a childlike wonder and boundless enthusiasm, discovering beauty in the most unlikely of places; his lyrics suggest psychedelic nursery rhymes, populated by absurdist characters (each and every one depicted on the jacket art) sketched in Crayola across a series of majestic melodies and ornate arrangements which belie the record's surface naïveté. For all of The Gay Parade's effervescence and whimsy, there's also a melancholy that pervades songs like "Jacques Lamure," "The Autobiographical Grandpa," and "My Friend Will Be Me," recalling the lovelorn hues of the previous Of Montreal record, The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy; far from deflating the euphoria, however, these moments simply acknowledge the necessity of sadness and loss to the human experience, and deem them worthy of celebration as well. These are songs in the key of life, Zen-like expressions of simplicity and innocence resonating with remarkable complexity and wisdom.
Customer Reviews
The Gay Parade - 4.5 Stars
The Gay Parade, an album as colorful and smart as it is ambitious, is a true standout among Of Montreal releases as well as indie and psychedelic releases in general. Kevin Barnes constructs this album as a celebration of life with each song and character sketch stylistically resembling a float in the parade itself. The songs themselves are sonically dense but never inaccessible as the melodic structures of each song stand out in front of the numerous flourishes of sound that permeate throughout. Barnes' gift for finding the right details to give to his characters appears fully formed here. A superficial listen of the album suggests that it disregards any realistic troubles in the world, instead favoring blissful whimsy. However, there is a sort of acknowledgement of melancholy in many of the songs which succeeds in giving it an emotional undercurrent. It's simply a celebration of life, both in happiness and despair, making it a beautiful and affirming record.
This is awesome
This is the first of Montreal album that I ever heard. It is very entertaining to listen to and the lyrics are catchy. I like that in the outro the singer is Claude Robert, who is Rose Robert's husband. I like how there is the crossover form other albums. This is a great addition for any of Montreal fan. Kevin Barnes and co. are so creative and I always countdown the months, and days till their next album comes out. And if you ever get the chance see them live!
Real Life Poetry
The Gay Parade is an excellent cross section of the what Of Montreal is all about. All songs on here are not only playful and a joy to listen to but they also tell an excellent story regardless of whether or not they are nonsensical or in all seriousness. In "The Autobiographical Grandpa", Kevin paints a wonderfully vivid, yet dismal, picture of a lonely grandfather that has lost it all; easily a story that if not relatable, is very easy to follow and enjoy. In short, The Gay Parade is a must for any fan of Of Montreal. It just puts a smile on your face!
