Album Review

Getaway People's 1998 self-titled debut features the group's social consciousness and their penchant for mixing different rock genres with hip-hop and soul beats. The single "She Gave Me Love" received some alternative radio airplay, thanks to its catchy, chorus-driven groove. The band's focus becomes more serious on tracks like "Mr. E," a drug-culture diss, and on "Does My Colour Scare You," which tackles racism; however, even at their most political, they maintain their easygoing sense of humor and pop sensibilities. Though Getaway People tends toward the repetitive, in small doses it provides an interesting view of European-based, post-alternative pop.

I remember this album from my freshman year in high school. A cousin brought me their cd after seeing them open for someone. Its a chill album with some well written songs. It's a bit poppy, but in comparison to what pop has become this still retains quite a bit of artistry. Worth a listen.
