"Ghost" of What's to Come

Little less than two months out from the release of their second studio release, The Glass Passenger, Jack's Mannequin tosses the proverbial bone to the dogs with this EP to keep the taste of that old songwriting blood fresh in the mouths of fans who've waited almost three years for new material. And it doesn't disappoint. The four tracks serve more as a segway from JM's debut, Everything in Transit, to the new album with its pairing of two new songs with two live versions of older songs. The Resolution, the first single off of The Glass Passenger, is, admittedly, a weaker strain of lead man Andrew McMahon's songwriting prowess, yet still manages to deliver with its simple, catchy and upbeat feel that definitely seems to carry the wider appeal to make it a competitive, accessible single. Bloodshot takes a blatant detour from any sound the band has ever produced - retains kinda of a poppy, disco-esque beat, like that of Bruised from EIT, yet has more of a gloomier, dark, grungier tone. In a way the two songs compliment each other in their respective outlooks. He also takes some interesting turns with his vocal work, having unexpected leaps in Resolution and a more moan-laden drawl for Bloodshot. A welcome change, I think, trying to lend a variety to his sounds. The other two, the live versions from EIT, come in the form of Holiday From Real (Live from SIR) (a show I was more than honored to attend a few years back), and the acoustic version of Kill the Messenger found on the first vinyl the band put out back in 2005. Holiday From Real is sort of an acoustic take on the song, with Andrew's piano leading the song, accompanied by Bobby on acoustic guitar, Dr. J on stand-up bass, and Jay doing some soft percussion in the background, resulting in a more precious, vulnerable, honest version of the track. Kill the Messenger is mainly an acoustic of Andrew on an electric piano with some percussion toward the end that definitely has a more quiet, intimate, small-club feel to it. Very pretty. Overall, a must have for any Jack's Mannequin or Andrew McMahon fan. Other people should perhaps might use EIT as a starting point for Jack's music, though The Resolution might take you from the first note.

Light years ahead of Everything In Transit

Jack's Mannequin has grown so much since it's 2005 debut, Everything In Transit. Featuring two songs from the upcoming album and 2 from the previous, it is clearly shown. The Resolution is unexplainably incredible, while Bloodshot is not quite something I've heard from Jack's Mannequin yet. Almost techno...But very great! Holiday from Real, from Everything in Transit, takes on a different, almost acoustic approach. His voice is vulnerable and it works for this. I very much enjoy Kill the Messenger on this EP. Also vulnerable, it makes the song seem sadder. Better than the original. After this I am ver pumped about The Glass Passenger's release in September!

"...I Can Hear the Sound of Your Voice Still Ringing in My Ear."

For ten years, he has stood at the edge of the modern rock world, watching as his music carefully infiltrated the headphones of countless young people, eager to hear what the man behind the piano had to say. Those who knew him when he was kissing drunk girls, and waking up in cars, still stand by, eagerly waiting for the next installment- an EP that today, could very well change the way we all listen to music. "The Ghost Overground" can only be described as a preview of what is still to come. As we patiently wait at the edge of our seats for the follow-up to the album that many of us have grown up with, "The Resolution" and "Bloodshot" offer us a satisfying taste of the promising future Jack's Mannequin has ahead of them. It would be wasteful and mundane to simply see these tracks for what they are as if they were singles on the radio. In order to truly appreciate the music, we must put them into context: the experiences Andrew has had as a human being and song-writer. From a decade in the public eye, to band-changes, near-death experiences, loss (and found) loved ones, and everything in between, Andrew has continued to provide us with the same beautiful talent and energy we have learned to expect from the young performer. It is from the ashes of these experiences that "The Ghost Underground" as well as "The Glass Passenger" have found influence and life. His music does more than just entertain- it continuously "rings in our ear," grows with us and offers us hope. I look forward to the next step.
