Album Review

Crazy Town's debut album, The Gift of Game, is similar to many other rap-inflected alternative metal albums in that it concentrates on sound over structure, creating macho, aggressive grooves with grinding, noisily textured guitars and the underlying feel of squared-off hip-hop beats. Hooks can be a bit hard to come by, since this isn't music that relies heavily on melody (or catchy guitar riffs), but that isn't necessarily a consideration for fans of the style. What's more relevant than the tightness of the songwriting is the intensity of the assault, and on that count, Crazy Town delivers the goods. Moreover, they're refreshingly skilled in the rap department when compared to some of their contemporaries, and the album bolsters its credibility with guest appearances from KRS-One and Mad Lion, to name two. Of course, Crazy Town's audience will be largely outside the hip-hop community, but it's evidence that they can be more serious about a truer fusion of genres when they want to be. There are elements of Limp Bizkit's juvenile humor, to be sure, but overall, the album shows promise.

Customer Reviews

Solid album and very underappreciated

First off, "Butterfly's" guitar riff was NOT RIPPED OFF from Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Chili Pepper's gave Seth Binzer their blessing to use that riff for the song. With that settled, The Gift Of Game is a very solid album. It incorporates very hard crunching guitars, synths, and furious ryhmes. The lyrics are very original and much better than most in the Rap/Rok genre. You can tell an effort was made when writing the lyrics. Even though most of the songs revolve around women, money, drugs, and sex. Any fan or rap and/or rock (or both!) can enjoy The Gift Of Game. "Darkside" is very catchy, "Black Cloud" has probably the deepest lyrics on the whole album, and "Revolving Door" is a great The-Ladies-Love-Me song. B-Boy 2000, Outro, and Drunk Guy probably is too much filler at the end, but as for the album as a whole it's a great listen. It isnt perfect...it's Crazytown. The Gift Of Game

Pretty Little Ditty

If you are going to be a Crazy Town fan, (why I'll never understand), listen to the song "Pretty Little Ditty" before you start saying how great these losers are.

If you own this album you might as well buy "Mother's Milk" too.

The Gift of Lame

For the most part, a pretty poor ablum. Except for "butterfly" (the guitar is ripped from a chili peppers song), and "revolving door", there isnt a whole lot to this album.

Biography

Formed: 1995 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Crazy Town's music and image reflected one of the most dynamic and volatile sociocultural environments on the planet — Los Angeles — where the urban squalor of the South Central district exists just minutes away from the glitz of Beverly Hills. Spearheaded by a team of producers/vocalists, Seth "Shifty Shellshock" Binzer and Bret "Epic" Mazur, Crazy Town combined hip-hop's lyrical attitude and rhythmic sass with the muscle of live rock instrumentation. The combination yielded...
