Something different.. ish

Smashmouth. The ultimate soundtrack, corporate sell-out band. They had the fortune of having a hit with one (pretty OK) song. They have since provided us with endless average covers of other peoples hits on various soundtrack albums. Their music is tight, the lead singers voice is notably different from other pop / rock singers, and the sound is a bit different than the other stuff on the radio today. For all of that, their music is still dull, derivative and forgettable. Luckily for them, that is the perfect recipe for a good Christmas album. I think the album itself is forgettable, the cover selections are mediocre, and it's not very exciting. However, background music is REQUIRED for Christmas celebrations, tree-trimming, and decking the halls, and it might be nice to have this album in your collection just to play something different while your square family members are visiting. There are few GREAT christmas albums by one artist, and there are a number of terrible compilations. This falls somewhere in between. Smashmouth has never been able to do justice on their cover tunes, this is no different, but their renditions are at least competent and consistent.

Rockin' Around The Palm Tree This Christmas

Not since the Beach Boys has there been a band that has that fun California sound. Well, OK...there's Sugar Ray, Switchfoot, No Doubt, the OC Supertones, etc... But these guys have such a diverse sound (from pop to punk) that does it for me. This new Christmas project from Smash Mouth is no exception, with tunes that I will add to my Rock Xmas Playlist on my iPod. My favorites are the cover of The Raveonettes classic, The Christmas Song (but you can never go wrong with that one), Come On Christmas, Christmas Come On (which is one of those songs you want to sing with a bunch of friends at a rowdy Christmas party), Father Christmas (which makes you think), and of course Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). I'm so looking forward to their new CD, highlighting their punk sound. Love you guys and Merry rockin' Christmas Greg, Steve, Michael, and Paul!

Wait-Is This Smash Mouth?

I love the band Smash Mouth, they rock hard. But this should be the soundtrack to a dumb kid movie starring Mary-Kate and Ashley when they were five-year-olds.

Biography

Formed: 1994 in San Jose, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

A novelty rock band in the same vein as Presidents of the United States of America, but with surf and garage influences instead of the Presidents' punk/thrash background, Smash Mouth found a hit in 1997 with the '50s-influenced "Walkin' on the Sun." The group was formed in 1994 in San Jose, CA, by vocalist Steve Harwell, a former rapper with the group F.O.S. After that group disintegrated, he began jamming with an old friend, drummer Kevin Coleman. Harwell's former manager introduced him to guitarist...
