Time Machines Do Exist
(I own a record of Hildegard of Bingen/Gothic Voices, which is beautiful. May I also recommend Tallis, Byrd and des Prez). >>Been cherry-pickin' Gregorian chant tunes for a while and eventually stumbled upon this--bought it wholesale! I'm a musicology student, and was enthralled with this collection of sacred music from the Byzantium era. Byzantium sacred music on the whole, while going through its own change of pace, is rooted in the sacred hymn music of ancient Rome. There is no known manuscript(s) dating to the ancient world, but we have historical descriptions of their music, for example, it is cited in the works of Roman historians such as Tacitus. Since this music is an oral tradition and since Byzantium transplanted Roman culture (influenced by the Greeks, Byzantines were in fact Romans, the name was only supplied later) there is a distinguished connection. Anyway, this recording is wonderful - gentle, yearning, evocative, archaic melodies. It's very enchanting and otherworldly, spinning its own perspective on life and the times. If you're new to this genre, add these ancient soundscapes to your library and chronologically work up to Gregorian, Hildegard, and the Renaissance. Spectacular!
Charming and Enchanting
I just downloaded it. I waited about 45 min for it to download (230kbs). I have so far listened to three tracks. It is hard to find Byzantine Chant of this quality. I have many recordings where it is difficult to hear the ison in the background. With this album I can hear the ison very well and the sound quality of the album is fantastic....clear as a bell. The performance of both choirs are very good as well. It definately will be a wonderful addition to my evening prayer rule as an added ambiance as the candles flicker before my Holy Icons scattered about my bed room. It's okay, but could have been better.
I really enjoy the old chants from the early days of the Christian church; not so much the words, but the music itself. It's very soothing. However, when you actually speak one of the languages used (Russian), and have to listen to a supposedly professional choral group butcher the pronunciation of the language, it seriously detracts from the listening experience. If you don't speak Russian, Greek, Bulgarian, or any of the other languages encountered here, you won't know the difference, and will probably enjoy the album tremendously.
