Album Review
As the dark electronic brood of acid jazz, trip-hop (or whatever they're calling it this third time around) comes back into favor, new groups are hard-pressed to distinguish themselves from the outfits of old (old of course being somewhere around 1996). Impressively, Mudville does just that, evoking the melancholy dirge of Portishead on the opener, "The Hero of the World" until the middle-eight reduces not to an unadorned hip-hop beat as expected, but rather a melodic piano refrain. It's a small difference, but one that is almost shocking to your ears, pre-programmed to presume the obvious, given how formulaic most downtempo is. Those same subtle nuances highlight this debut record by the San Francisco duo of Ben Rubin ad Marilyn Carino, who between them have worked with artists as diverse as Neil Young & Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot and Killah Priest. Carino's voice maintains the somber tone of Beth Gibbons, but her range matches the bluesy swell of PJ Harvey. Air-like keyboard phrasing drives a majority of the songs, with a warbling minor key ache that fits naturally with mildly synthesized percussive clicks and whistles, and of course the steady-as-a-rock drumbeat. The unit breaks free the most on "Surfer Girls," which displays a musical breadth far greater than you would have ever imagined in the opening chords of this album, taking the funeral march some places it's never before been, the ocean.

Mudville's best
Marilyn Carino's voice is the gem shining forth from this excellent music. The songs here are all about yearning and feel like a sort of celebration of being human. I love the groovy "Hero of the World", the deep and twisted "Blown" and the orchestral jazzy feel of "Sunshine is on Me". Ben Rubin is a really interesting producer, he seems to be combining things like middle eastern instruments and something like distorted bagpipes (?) at times, but the whole thing sounds sweet and soulful and satisfying. Is it jazz? Trip-hop? Electronic soundscape? Mudville is all of these and the sum elevates all the parts. At times a bit overly dense - especially when the production threatens to obscure the gorgeous point of all this, the voice of Carino. Get this album and listen to it in order, good for the head in so many ways.
Amazing, SOULFUL electronica with beautiful female vocals!!!
Discovering Mudville was a real revelation for me - finally, an electronica band that was super heavy and just gorgeous to listen to. Marilyn Carino is one of the greatest singers EVER, her voice just slays me. The songs are kind of downtempo but really lush and full. Deep music, a real find. Their latest CD Iris Nova is excellent as well.
One of the best downtempo electonica albums of the 2000s
Mudville is so underrated. Its amazing how intelligent and well-crafted this music is, it doesn't take any shortcuts and doesn't pander to any easy demographic. "hero of the World" should be a ginormous hit, its so lilting and catchy, as good as the best of Morcheeba. I also love "Stoned" and "Pray", which has an amazingly warm and trembly sound that I find captivating. The whole album works when played beginning to end, which I also love. And I can't say enough about the gorgeous, expressive voice of Marilyn Carino - she gets compared to Beth Gibbons a lot but only if Beth had years of assertiveness training. Mudville is music for a gray day, a warm night, a time when you're gathering thoughts you'll never share with anyone.
Or for sex, its also great for sex.
