String Theory Genius
I recently saw the Goteborg Sting Theory Orchestra play a gig with Jose Gonzalez in London, and it was one the best shows I've ever experienced. The conductor, Nackt, had arranged many of Gonzalez's tunes, and a few covers, with expert, progressive genius. I'd compare the arrangements to the brilliant Christopher O'Reilly's arrangements of Radiohead's music in his album True Love Waits. It's clear that he loved the source material, and his direction of the orchestra was exciting, nuanced, and truly mesmerizing. Of course Gonzalez was incredible too, but the GSTO took the music to new levels.
This album shows their virtuosity at its best. They team up with several amazing artists, bringing depth and whimsy to each piece of orchestral magnificence. From delicate, lilting, stringed underscoring to full-out marching band gusto, this group capitalizes on the possibility that each song holds, surpassing the most jaded music critic's expectations of cutting edge musical collaboration.
I live in anticipation of the full recording of their Gonzalez collaboration.
