You'll want to join the circus
Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been around since 1998, and this is their 4th studio release. All of them have something wonderful to offer, and this is decidedly another solid step in defining them as journeymen of roots folk rock. Previous comparisons have been; Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Band, Tom Petty/The Heartbreakers, Neil Diamond, Syd Barrett, The Incredible String Band, (I would humbly add; Ray Davies/The Kinks, Fairport Convention, and even Gong). They have been handily described as the 'Hillbilly Pink Floyd', and they're fine with that short-handed tag, it captures their Americana/British invasion blend. But there is nothing derivative, ersatz or intentionally retro about them. It's earnest and soulful music, drawn fresh from an old well that contemporary music thought long-drained. They are a GREAT band to see perform live, but their original material translates comfortably to the studio. It's warm, rich, well-crafted, and sensitively arranged music that you can easily embrace.
Their albums are well produced by co-founder and lead guitarist; Sharkey McEwen, who clearly understands how to bring their unique vibe to the listening audience.
Like their previous releases, there are no weak tracks. Every song stands strong, and it's hard to go wrong here. Highly recommended.
