iTunes Review

Old 97’s have been one of the most consistently enjoyable alt-country groups of the past two decades. They do so by placing a premium on quality songwriting. Rhett Miller and Murry Hammond provide one another with beautiful counterpoint. This live collection, the second part of an intended double-album, is one of consistent power. The guitars boil over and the vocals create their own manic energy. The ferocious attack of “The Actor” is among the group’s most astonishing numbers. “I’m a Trainwreck” takes a love song and jams it out with tons of booze. “No Simple Machine” pumps out a shuffling juke-joint rhythm with an uncompromising rawness among the harmonies and stirring guitar solos. “Manhattan (I’m Done)” takes a rockabilly-surf rock approach and turns mixed emotions into a commanding pop tune. “Visiting Hours” turns up the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St. vibe with satisfying results. “How Lovely All It Was” is the album’s quietist moment and even here the group keeps things strolling magnificently. One of their strongest releases.

Exceptional album.

One strong song after another, easily their strongest work in a decade. You'll be listening to this one for a long time.
