iTunes Review

The Grateful Dead achieved such a presence in popular music that it's sometimes hard to believe they ever actually had a first album. Phil Lesh later noted that the only track that resembles what the Dead were doing at the time is “Viola Lee Blues,” an extended jam that translates the band’s trademark rambling groove. While the rest of Grateful Dead might not achieve the musical majesty of their later works, the album still stands as one of the most enjoyable examples of early hippie rock in San Francisco. The band’s love for blues is evidenced on “New, New Minglewood Blues,” “Sitting On Top of the World,” and “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl,” but it is a cover of “Beat It On Down the Line” (by Bay Area street musician Jesse Fuller) that offers the clearest picture of how folk music morphed into psychedelia in the mid-‘60s. The band’s original songs stand out among the pack, a good sign. Along with anthems by Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane, “Cold Rain and Snow,” and especially the magnificent “The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)” are emblematic of San Francisco at the dawn of the Summer of Love.

Great, But Not A Must

Though some think this album is too fast and poppy, its home to a lot of cool tracks and its speed adds an exciting energy that is unique to it. The Dead recorded this album in only four days and (except for bob weir) were all on speed during recording. Because of this, all the tracks are at pretty high tempo and the result is a cool high-energy effect. Admittedly, Morning Dew is pretty much ruined by this, but it makes most of the other tracks sound really cool. The Golden Road is the gem of the album, bursting with fun and energy from Jerry’s exuberant vocals with great harmonies on the chorus, Pigpens awesome organ and Phil’s perfect bass. Cold Rain and Snow is another good one, with Pigpens organ giving that awesome trebly sound, awesome harmonies on the chorus and what is possibly the best bridge ever. You have to hear it to believe it. Also tracks like Minglewood Blues, Beat It On Down the Line, Sitting on Top of The Wold and Viola Lee Blues (especially cool) reflect the Dead’s blues and bluegrass influences. Though this album isn’t a must, it’s a ton of fun and, like all dead albums, is worth much more than the $10 your paying for it. If you've just begun your G.D. jouney start with: Workingman's Dead, American Beauty, Europe 72.

The Grateful Dead

Excellent album. Buy the whole album but if you are just buying songs get Cold Rain and Snow, Sittin' On Top of the World, Morning Dew, New, New Minglewood Blues, The Golden Road, and Alice D. Millionaire. And shame on you who gave this album only two stars just cause you can't get viola lee blues. If you are smart, you'd buy the whole album.
