Slick Rick is a hip-hop superhero, with an eye-patch instead of a cape. Arguably the best storytelling MC to ever touch a microphone, he pioneered the style of wearing massive, Mr. T amounts of jewelry, has been in and out of prison and threatened with deportation, and though his career has ebbed and flowed over the course of some 25 years, he's universally respected and regularly collaborates with the biggest artists in the game. He has several quality albums out, but this one, his 1988 debut, made him a crossover mega-star and remains his most defining work. Great Adventures is a wild ride through the streets of New York, with Rick's suavely accented verses relaying vivid tales about how crime doesn't pay ("Children's Story"), adolescent crushes ("Teenage Love"), and the perils of tough kids and angry husbands ("The Moment I Feared"). He swings from scandalous XXX tales like "Indian Girl (An Adult Story)" to the inspirational message rap of "Hey Young World" with ease, backed by ear-tickling beats from underrated beat magician Vance Wright. A classic album from one of the best who ever did it.
