It's about time!
Finally! As a kid growing up in Seattle my guitar heroes were Jimi Hendrix, Rick Knotts and Roger Fisher. Jimi's jammin' on a cloud somewhere but Rick and Roger decided to join forces and make something touching and memorable. The guitar work on this album is exquisite, of course with these two genuises it would have to be. The drumming of Mike Derosier, awesome. The bass lines of Lynn Sorenson elegant and textured, and the words and vocals of Mike Curley are both haunting, passionate and full of wit. Give these guys a listen. They're sages and yet they've never sounded so fresh and vital.
Solid album from a solid band
Clever Bastard’s “The Great Unconformity” is a return to the great album-oriented rock of yesterday. I played this album for a co-worker one day and she liked it so much she bought her own copy off of iTunes. She played it for her brother, who then played it for his co-worker because he liked it so much! They were a bit upset afterward that I hadn’t shared the album with them sooner! Listeners can put this album on and get lost in the tight, layered melodies and rich lyrics. The album production on a whole is very concise. Two of the album's many highlights are in the haunting Big City and Shadows of Brook Lane. I have not been able to get either out of my head since first listening to this album. “The Great Unconformity” reminds me of Heart’s “Little Queen” album, as songs on both albums seamlessly flow into one another and have a folk element to them, but can rock when needed. I would have liked to see more short, rocking songs like Never Too Late included on the album. I would also love to see more of Roger Fisher’s guitar playing featured on future Clever Bastard albums. “The Great Unconformity” has some great licks from Fisher, especially on Master of My Day, but not enough on the rest of the album, in my opinion. I can’t wait for their next album! Key tracks: Hold For Me, Shadows of Brook Lane, Master of My Day, Never Too Late, Big City, Ghosts.
