Album Review

Spanning just seven years, yet perfectly encapsulating the Ink Spots' entire recording career, MCA's 15-track Greatest Hits has everything the curious require to understand what made this quartet so influential for the thousands of R&B vocal groups to come, from the Ravens to Boyz II Men: close harmonies, sparkling romantic monologues, and the interplay of high tenor Bill Kenny and deep bass Orville "Hoppy" Jones. In residence are all of the biggest hits — "If I Didn't Care," "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano," "We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me)," "Java Jive," and "The Gypsy" — though there is one notable exclusion: the double-sided chart-topper "I'm Making Believe" b/w "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall," from the movie Sweet & Lowdown. Everything else here is pure gold.
