Barry Rick-Rolls

Barry was really keeping busy the last few years, he released two songbooks in 2006, another songbook, and a Christmas album recorded for Hallmark cards in 2007, and this cd released in 2008, the "Greatest Songs Of The Eighties." The Christmas album is slated for commercial release this year. On this album I have to question some of the choices for he picks songs closely associated with the original artists and the originals are considered definitive. "Never Gonna Give You Up" was a smash for Rick Astley and Barry's cover is a novelty, his timing is close to the original and he sounds like he had a bit of a hard time singing on tempo. "Islands In The Stream" is so closely associated with Dolly and Kenny that it should be "hands off," the Bee-Gees covered the song for inclusion on their "Greatest Hits" for cohesive sake, it was so carefully recorded it sounds like the original demo. However for this version the choice of Reba McEntire as a partner re-invents the song, but this and all other versions will be forever eclipsed by the magical pairing of Kenny and Dolly. He steers clear of rock, even though he covered Journey with the pop ballad "Open Arms" he didn't attempt Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You" or "I Don't Want To Live Without You." One song, a cover of Paul Young's cover of Hall & Oates "Every Time You Go Away" was recorded during these sessions and was released overseas as a single and was included in an updated collection of his hits.

Man everyone with a sense of humor and appreciation for what's truly great in the world can dig some old school Barry Manilow. It's all good with the 70's stuff. This sounds like someone took terrible elevator music versions of these songs and had him song over them. It's just embarrassing. It's really beyond bad. It actually made me feel nauseous.

This is by far the worst and funniest album I have ever encountered. Please Barry, please...don't do it again! Just stop Barry...you are just embarassing yourself.

In terms of both record sales and career longevity, Barry Manilow is one of the most successful adult contemporary singers ever. That success hasn't necessarily translated to respect (or even ironic hipster appreciation) in most quarters; Manilow's music has been much maligned by critics and listeners...
