iTunes Review

The Decemberists have always been high on ambition and their fifth album is yet another conceptual coup in which a woman named Margaret is abducted by a villain known as “The Rake,” while a political character (“Valerie Plame”), a child murder, and other deaths visit the picture. All of which suggests the Decemberists have at least one foot in the progressive rock ambitions of the ‘70s. The additional use of Jethro Tull-like dynamics and orchestration suggest this Portland, Oregon ensemble are ready to take the complete plunge and pretend as if the past three decades never happened. Yet, one doesn’t have to pay strict attention to the plotline or lyric sheet to appreciate the melancholy of “Isn’t It A Lovely Night?” One might want to keep a scorecard to keep track of the impressive cast of voices, ranging from Robyn Hitchcock to My Morning Jacket’s Jim James to Lavender Diamond’s Becky Stark. It’s a 17-part musical that breaks down into digestible smaller pieces for the conceptually challenged.

The Rebirth of the Album

Continuing their transition towards a harder more "rock" sound, The Decemberists have produced The Hazards of Love. In an age where the album as an art form has all but died, this album is a bit of an anomaly. This is an album that demands to be listened to from start to finish. The depth present in each track is nothing short of astonishing. It only gets better each time. If you are a fan of The Decemberists, do not hesitate: this is their best effort to date.

Great Album from a Great Band

For the longest time, (it seems anyway), I have waited for this album to be released and now that it is released early on itunes makes it just that much better. I have recently listened to the entire album and I have to say that this is some great music. Though it is different in ways than their previous albums (more of a rock vibe from the entire album), it shows growth in their music. Following is a review of each song:

Prelude: enchanting in parts and melancholy with a little techno sound 7/10
HoL1: good transition from the previous song and has some good parts 8.5/10
A Bower Scene: a short song with more "rock" sound and loud noises 8/10
Won't Want For Love: good beats and nice change in singer 9/10
HoL2: so far my favorite song, has some great parts 9.5/10
Queen's Approach: short transition with some 'plucking' of strings 7/10
Isn't...Night: continues the plucking and somewhat a return to older songs with a more folky tone 9.5/10
Wanting Comes in Waves1: starts soft and gets heavier as it progresses; almost "White Stripes" like in parts 9/10
An Interlude: a sweet sounding transition 8.5/10
Rake's Song: the song that most will know, definitely a good song 10/10
Abduction of Margaret: continues the rock theme of album, though still good 9/10
Queen's Rebuke: more guitar riffs than most of the rest, but yet again a good song in its own right 8/10
Annan Water: mixture somewhat of old and new and meshes well, sounds a little like "The Killers" in parts 9/10
Margaret in Captivity: "Wanted Dead or Alive" theme with other sounds and influences 8.5/10
HoL3: a great rhythm throughout the entire song with an addition of children? singing, though I like it 9.5/10
Wanting Comes in Waves2: much of the same 7.5/10
HoL4: also a very good song with some older Decemberists in parts 9.5/10

Entire Album: 9/10 - good songs but quite different from previous Decemberists albums and even if a few things were lost with the transition to a more rock-ish sound, the entire album is still overall a great record.

A Huge Leap Forward For the Decemberists

I've had this album for about a week now, and have not been able to refrain from listening to it since. This is a true concept album that is meant to be taken in in one sitting, from its mysterious beginning to its tragically triumphant finish. "Hazards" should be judged as a singular entity, a symphony of repeated lyrical and musical motifs that come together to form a beautiful story that becomes more compelling with each listen. Though it may not seem it at first, this album does have some great stand-alone tracks that can be enjoyed apart from the story. "The Wanting Comes in Waves", "The Hazards of Love 1", "The Rake's Song", "The Hazards of Love 4" and "Annan Water" all hold their weight along with other classic Decemberists songs, but this album is still best as a whole. Colin Meloy and company provide the listener with a truly unique and powerful experience with this ground-breaking album.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in Portland, OR

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Led by Helena, MT, native Colin Meloy, Portland, OR's the Decemberists craft theatrical, hyper-literate pop songs that draw heavily from late-'60s British folk acts like Fairport Convention and Pentangle and the early-'80s college rock grandeur of the Waterboys and R.E.M. The band's initial lineup also included drummer Ezra Holbrook, bassist Nate Query, keyboardist/accordionist Jenny Conlee, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk. Frontman Meloy had previously devoted some time to an alternative country...
