Card Approaches the Unapproachable

Lament is the theme of Card's newest and perhaps most thought-provoking album to date — not a small feat when considering the long list of thought-provoking albums that have been the musical career of Michael Card. In approaching 'Lament' in the Bible, Card takes us on a musical and theological journey through the Scriptures and through his own musings on the 'Hiddenness of God,' God's custom of making Himself obscure and invisible at the most inopportune moments in the lives of His people. At the very time we need to see Him, to hear Him, to experience Him in some perceptible way, He seems to go missing, and without leaving a note as to when He will return. Card, in song after song on this album, approaches what too many of us are afraid to approach, or maybe we don't know how to approach, because it is too painful, too real. Card looks full-faced on the brokenness of our world, and, in turn, on the brokenness of the human condition. And in this brokenness, Card finds a God who 'allows,' even welcomes, our painful expressions of frustration, bewilderment and confusion: "Where is He when I need Him most? Why does He seem to hide when I look for Him with the greatest sense of urgency?" The songs provide few answers to the questions we all ask, if not out loud, at least in the running conversations of our minds. But what he does provide for us, and with it, he provides the encouragement we all crave, sometimes desperately — what he does provide is the word from God that says, "I am here. I am not missing, or gone, or out to lunch or on vacation. I love you; I care about you; and I will not leave you or forsake you." Perhaps the best thing Card does in this album is to reassure us, through story and through introspection and through questioning, that our Lord is present and that Presence is all we really need, after all the crying and questioning — He is here and He is not silent. Musically, once again, we get from Card the familiar style that he has, through the years, made his own. And that style is one that tailors his songs to the themes found within them. From the moody and introspective "Come Lift Up Your Sorrows," to the almost angry and shouting "How Long?", Card's music is driven by its themes. And it's his themes that keep me coming back for more. It's the subject matter, the scholarly devotion, the musically theological depth, the mirror he gives me that allows me to see myself as God sees me, that causes me, when I hear that Michael Card has produced a new album of songs, to run out and buy it as quickly as I can. Thanks again Mike.

Amazing Theology

What I love about Michael Card, aside from his amazing musical abilities, is his desire to protray theology and understading of God that is correct biblically! He is always seeking wisdom and insight for a host of pastors and theologians to ensure he is accurate. I always end up thinking hard when I listen to his songs!

Michael Card began writing songs at a Kentucky college, where he would write praise choruses for a local church service. Although pushed to earn his Ph.D. by a professor, he was lured into the recording industry by friends Randy Scruggs and John Thompson, who needed a musician to record for their production company's demos. The record label insisted they produce Card's music as their first project, and his acoustic folk sound appeared from the very start; among his records was 1981's...
