Great Summer Music

Ah, summer! It's that time of year when the music industry releases tingy pop music, arriving in a flash of pop and noise, decorated in mass marketing tricks, all designed to push generic fonder onto the masses. It's during this time of year when we get filler tracks meant to invoke the feeling and nostaliga of summer, music to fill in the gaps between the big dance floor anthems, and mundane music to fill the radio's silence. Normally, I dislike the summer releases, they are (as I've said before) generic and also-ran. Yet, this summer is actually starting off differently, and I'm thankful for that. Behold, Chad D.

Chad D is a new artist just starting off his music career, and honestly, I wouldn't have known about him if I hadn't ran across him on Twitter (You can check him out here at twitter.com/chaddyd). He described his music as Neo-Pop. Honestly, I was intrigued, I mean, after all, what the hell is Neo-Pop, because most things that come out in Pop could be described as new, I mean, that's why it's popular right? That having been said, I followed for a bit and then picked up his new album when it dropped Thursday. To say I'm actually happy with the purchase is an understatement.

Over the course of ten tracks Chad D defines what he thinks is Neo-Pop, but also does what a good artist should do, defines himself. As a new artist, it's rare that they let their sexuality play a role in the tracks, but Chad D doesn't shy away from that and that's one of the things I like. It's music for the masses with a gay edge. The opening track "The Story Begins" sounds like a late night track you'd hear at the dance halls and describes that moment on the dancefloor when you think you've met the one you love. The title track, "Human Link" comes off with a cool and cocky swagger yet tacks on an anthem-like motivational chorus to be who you are, speak you're mind (the old march to your own drum line) but it actually SOUNDS fresh. But it's not all dance anthems or motivational talk, there's moments of sincerity and sweetness hidden away in tracks like "Michael" and "Ocean Blue Love".

Needless to say, this is an album, as a cohesive whole, that I'll actually have on repeat this summer. That's the other thing, Chad D seems to understand the benefit of making a cohesive album, not just a series of singles and filler (something else I loathe in the music industry). The only other artist really doing this (on a fame level) is Lady GaGa. So do yourself a favor, pick up Chad D's album and help support new music.
