Album Review

The Hunter's Lullaby begins in a Gothic gloam and finishes in a melancholy bathos of strings, fitting bookends for this highly personal and introspective album. This is Our Lady Peace's frontman Raine Maida's first foray into solo territory, and an intriguing excursion it is. Best described as a poetry slam backed by hip-hop beats and acoustic instruments, the set defies any hopes for categorization. Musically, too, it slips around genre boundaries, with elements of rock, indie, folk, jazz, and R&B coming to the fore, a hybrid sound where the atmospheres hang heavy, and the enticing melodies drift like mist. Creating a "Confessional" is the obvious aim, a place for Maida to open his soul and air his inner concerns and compulsions. Thematically the set is all over the place, as the artist looks with nostalgia at his past and with concern at our dystopian present, wrestles with religious, environmental and political issues, sets off for California, returns home, and experiences sensory overload. Musically, "Careful What You Wish For" shrouds itself in gothic dance and "Rat Race" in rock, as does "Confessional," albeit in retro-'60s British Invasion fashion. "The Snake and the Crown" mixes jazz and hip-hop, "Yellow Brick Road" blends hip-hop, R&B, and a touch of folk, while moody ballads in varying genres fill out the rest of the set. The lyrics throughout resonate, the backings accentuating the almost feverish and febrile moods Maida's words create. Food for thought and a banquet for the ears, this set's atmospheres linger long after the final notes sound.

wow. what a phenomenal album. i found this one on accident and am thoroughly impressed. raine has a very soothing listenable voice. i think its got a little bit of a modest mouse feel mixed with matt kearney, the albums strong points are rat race yellow brick road and sex love and honey. buy the whole thing you wont be dissatisfied

Amazing song writer...

This man is an amazing song writer. His voice has always been unique and set him apart from any other singer. I am a huge OLP fan and not to hear his voice set against harder rock music was actually refreshing. I would definately recommend this album to anyone who likes OLP.

no trace of Our Lady Peace here, beyond Raine's voice :-)

I'm enough of a fan of Our Lady Peace's work that I admittedly came into Raine Maida's solo album with certain expectations. So it took me three or four listens to get past being startled at the largely spoken-word, beat-laden nature of The Hunter's Lullaby. But once you get past your own expectations you'll find this to be a fascinating album. There are themes running throughout but each song also has its own message. The standout tracks will likely be different for each listener, although the first single Yellow Brick Road will likely jump off the page at you. If you like Raine's voice from his earlier work you'll probably like this album. Set aside your expectations as an OLP fan, and you might even love this album.

Singer and songwriter Raine Maida met guitarist Mike Turner at the University of Toronto in 1992 and the two formed the post-grunge band Our Lady Peace, recruiting bassist Chris Eacrett and jazz drummer Jeremy Taggart. The band signed to Relativity and issued Naveed, which included the modern rock hit "Starseed," in 1995. Bassist Duncan Coutts replaced Eacrett for 1997's Clumsy, followed two years later by Happiness Is Not a Fish That You Can Catch. Spiritual Machines appeared in 2001 and, shortly...
