Album Review

Herbie Hancock's star-studded The Imagine Project was several years in the making, and recorded in seven countries with musicians from all over the globe. Most selections are interpretations of well-known pop, folk, and soul songs. The best things here are indeed fine. There's a gorgeous reading of Baden Powell's “Tempo de Amore” thanks to Lucas Martins' bassline and CéU's singing. “Space Captain” by the Derek Trucks-Susan Tedeschi Band —with Hancock and Colaiuta — brings out a much-needed, soulful grit in Tedeschi's vocals, gospelized four-party harmony, and tough slide playing by Trucks. A full-on Indian session band interacts with Shorter's knotty soprano sax, and the only truly engaged Hancock piano playing on the set.

The Imagine Project

Here's my two cents...if you care: This CD is great, hands down!. The title track doesnt get any better than this especially with Pink & Jeff Beck to say the least. The remake of Don't Give Up is perfect w/Pink and John Legend. This version is up there with Gabriels version adn Willie Nelsons version. This LP is more of a compliment to the CD that came out prior to the Joni letters which featured guests such as Christina Aguilera and Johnny Lang to mention a few.....In the end with all of the talent on this CD not to mention the genius that is Herbie Hancock you cannot go wrong! Outstanding work by a master craftsmen.

Thank you Herbie

The point of this album goes so much deeper than music. It embodies the connection between cultures and people that can truly help us understand how to create world peace. Thank you for your inspiration and for your guidance in how to add value to the universe.

Sincerely,
Greg Spero

Imagine There's No Countries

Herbie Hancock has followed up his 2008 Album Of The Year, River: The Joni Letters, with another strong contender for the very same honor. The Imagine Project is a highly sophisticated release containing first rate performances from some world class talent....and I must stress the word 'world', for the performers are from all over the globe. I believe that nearly every continent is represented on this album. With so many varying styles of music and unique personalities blended into the mix, having the musical knowledge and diversity of players such as Vinnie Colaiuta, Larry Klein, Marcus Miller, Tal Wilkenfeld and Manu Katche working their magic is key to serving the intent of this prestigious project to its fullest.
In my opinion, there would only be one track that doesn't live up to the promise of this project and that would be the weak collaboration with Dave Matthews on The Beatles classic Tomorrow Never Knows. Another somewhat disappointing aspect was the decision to replace Seal's vocals on Don't Give Up with those of John Legend. Legend does an honorable job, but his smoother style doesn't quite fit Gabriel's song in the same manner that the grittier and throatier voice of Seal did. But I must remind myself that had I not heard Seal's take on the track, then I would not be expressing this and so please know that I am not complaining about Legend, because he is wonderful as well.

Herbie Hancock will always be one of the most revered and controversial figures in jazz — just as his employer/mentor Miles Davis was when he was alive. Unlike Miles, who pressed ahead relentlessly and never looked back until near the very end, Hancock has cut a zigzagging forward path, shuttling between almost every development in electronic and acoustic jazz and R&B over the last third of the 20th century and into the 21st. Though grounded in Bill Evans and able to absorb blues, funk,...
