iTunes Review
Steven Wilson has always been out of step with the musical world, never ceding to fashion. Under a variety of names — No-Man, Bass Communion, Blackfield and Steven Wilson — he has recorded music that is meant for anyone willing to listen past the commercial music world’s need for a quick hit single and indulge themselves in something that’s sometimes classical in composition, progressive rock in arrangement and heavy with ambience and mood. With track five, “Drawing the Line,” Wilson breaks into nearly conventional hard rock, but it’s a slow, brooding walk to get there. In an age of MP3 singles, Wilson has crafted an 18-track musical piece where each track requires the other. Songs segue from one to the other, indulging in electronics (“The Incident”), exploring folk (“The Seance”) or sprawling through space (“Occam’s Razor,”) or both (“I Drive the Hearse”). During its near 12 minutes “Time Flies” encapsulates just about every style imaginable. Porcupine Tree explore territory that’s at once familiar, yet all their own.
Customer Reviews
Don't do anything else, just listen
To truly appreciate this album you need to just sit back and listen or you will miss a lot of the genius here. Even though there are 18 tracks here the first 14 are to be treated as one track 'The Incident', and while brilliant on their own the combination of all the pieces is truly something to be marveled at. The center piece of the album is Time Flies which was previously released on here albeit edited down. As good as that is the full version is a completely different experience and will leave you stunned. Before this was released Steven Wilson said that after listening to this that things will never be the same, and he was right. This is Porcupine Tree on a whole new level. You owe it to yourself to hear this album no matter what your taste in music.
genius
When every other thing you hear is auto-tuned talking, volume crank, and over saturated beats created by someone nearly twice your age, Porcupine Tree "wow's" everyone and creates something they call "music". Apparently this music thing is a big deal and "The Incident" is a prime example as to why. Mr. Wilson is a genius, turning anything he gets his hands on into gold, and the music he writes isnt shabby either. Pick this album up if you are a music fan, or wish to find out just what exactly "music" and all its rave is about.
Pure progressive genius
Porcupine Tree has grown from a loner's self-indulgent psychedelic project to a soaring progressive rock monster that is the genre's standard bearer. With The Incident, the UK-based band proves once more that they are not afraid of commercial music, nor of exploring new melodic shapes and forms that could alienate some existing fans.
The 55-minute-long title track, which is deemed as a 'song-cycle' rather than simply a 'song' or a 'suite' by leader Steven Wilson, explores a dauting concept, through fourteen vignettes of incredible transcendence, be it on their own, or as one. And, if such lengthy and musically rich endeavor should not satisfy the ever-thirsty progressive rock following, four more songs, aimed more at concepts of bitterness, anger and existentialism are included as a savory post-Incident experience, without creating some great atmospheres of their own.
Word of advice: Buy this album if you like Dream Theater, Marillion's old era, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd and even Tool. It will blow you away. Guaranteed.
