Fantastic

Zeigeist's debut The Jade Motel is everything you could ever want of pure, danceable electro-pop. Often compared to fellow Swedish pop group The Knife, don't let the similarities fool you. Zeigeist definitely has potential and substance all their own, though far more appropriate for the dance floor. The most anticipated album of 2008 thus far, hands down.

Your fist will bury itself...

To start off, I unknowingly had Zeigeist's song "Tar Heart" ever since The Knife's "Silent Shout" was first leaked all those years ago. I didn't buy that it was The Knife at all: it was way too upbeat for the album, but didn't find out the true artist until a week or so ago. With that aside, Zeigeist may be compared to The Knife due to some similar sounds/ideas, or just for their proximity in geographical location, but it is safe to say that Zeigeist has a sound and direction all their own. I read a review of The Jade Motel somewhere in which someone described its sound as parts of The Knife, Goldfrapp and Scissor Sisters, yet still a new sound. I have to agree with that. This debut is definitely well-suited for the dancefloor, or even the comfort and privacy of your room/home: it's that catchy. The synth lines/beats are to DIE for, especially on "Wrecked Metal", which is one of the album's strongest tracks. "Tar Heart" is the perfect blend of darkness and catchiness, and the lyrics are extremely twisted and intriguing. As far as the rest of the album is concerned, the opening track "Humanitarianism" is wonderful. The parallels to Scissor Sisters will abound when listening to "Cuffs" but in such a good way it should make any electronica lover's feet tap and body sway. The line in "Bunny," in which the singer states "That tank-topped muscle boy could never show romance" really stands out: satirical and sassy, yet playful and a bit silly. The chorus of "Bunny" is so upbeat, it may make your face melt, but in the best way possible. One can only wonder what "bunny" the singer will show us when she dances... The closing track "Dawn // Night" is quite a beauty - the right amounts of noir feeling I've come to expect in closing tracks, yet still dance-worthy enough. Zeigeist definitely ends the album with a bang. Although I haven't mentioned many of the other tracks, they were all decent enough to receive four stars, minus the small interlude tracks. The Jade Motel is a solid debut, one that hopefully will help Zeigeist to keep raising the bar on future releases. A must buy for all electronica buffs, or anyone looking to groove. Standouts: Humanitarianism, Tar Heart, Wrecked Metal, Bunny, Cuffs and Dawn // Night.

I just want to show support for one of my favorite bands/albums in a long time. Woot!
