Album Review

Just less than a year on from Pigeons, a sophomore album that found Here We Go Magic simultaneously expanding their personnel, stylistic scope, and mainline indie rock critical profile, the Brooklyn quintet returned with the inexplicably titled January EP. (Perhaps they decided to split the difference between the May release date and the Halloween-ish cover art.) Pigeons already felt like a somewhat less than coherent grab bag of odds and ends, so the prospect of six holdovers from the time of its recording isn't overwhelmingly enticing. But January acquits itself surprisingly well, often offering a sharper sense of focus than its parent album. Not that anything here is a major departure from Pigeons' hazy, lazy psychedelia, but tunes like the gently pretty, Shins-ish "Hands in the Sky" and the jaunty, slightly goofy "Backwards Time" arguably boast sharper, clearer melodies than anything included there. The brightly woozy five-beat psych-popper "Tulip" and the gorgeously lilting "Song in Three" (which is actually in six) also manage to make more out of less, highlighting the band's gift for unobtrusively subtle rhythmic complexity, while the brief "Hollywood" is an enjoyably eerie bit of sparse, spectral choral folk. That leaves only one truly negligible cut, making this EP a definite keeper for fans and worth a listen for the curious. Even if the primary common characteristic of this stuff is how exceedingly pleasant it all is, there's always a place for that, regardless of what month it is. ~ K. Ross Hoffman, Rovi

So delicious

Surprised that a few of these didn't make it onto Pigeons. It's a great, too-short EP (well, not too short for an EP, just sorta too short because it's really good). Tulip, Hands in the Sky, Song in Three, & Backwards Time are all gems worthy of the album. Pigeons has a little fat, and their first album has LOTS of fat. I kinda feel like, with this EP, they have finally released a true masterpiece, except they spread all the goods over two & a half albums. Actually, I'm gonna go make that mix now...

Can't wait for their new album!!

Airtight.

One those to play from end-to-end, then repeat.

HWGM demonstrating their range and songwriting skills on this EP staring strong with Tulip, which sets the pace for what you can expect - followed closely by Song in Three with a slight meditative pause in Hollywood.

It all rounds out with (my favorite) Backwards Time; an overclocked, guitar-driven track with a strong prog rock core and a nice new wave aftertaste.

Can't wait till their next full release? Well wet your appetite with a sure shot and get this EP now.

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Here We Go Magic's creative center, singer/songwriter Luke Temple, first made his name as a muralist, and the Brooklyn band's music fully fits that pedigree. HWGM's ethereal collage of indie folk, baroque pop, and plains country (and whatever else strikes their fancy) lolls back with dizzyingly hypnotic vocals, generating the feel of a vast, splashed-on panorama. Originally from Boston, Temple bounced nomadically about the country before settling in New York City by the mid-2000s. While the bandmembers...
