What a Delight!
My sister and I grew up watching films such as The Ten Commandments, Singin' in the Rain, My Fair Lady, and a whole bunch of other classics, this movie being one of them. Listening to these songs reminds me of my childhood watching the best of the best musicals. It's such a delight to be able to still listen to these songs and have them available on iTunes.
Screw "Around the World in 80 Days"
This movie should have won the best picture Oscar. It is well-acted and well-executed, and the the soundtrack is gorgeous.
This is, by far, the best recording of The King and I. Yul Brynner sounds much more confident than in his broadway recording, Marni Nixon is the perfect choice to dub Deboarh Kerr (you can hardly tell the difference), and Alfred Newman's orchestrations are, as always, perfect.
That being said, the recording still has flaws compared to the original broadway. Doretta Morrow is a better Tuptim than Leona Gordon, and Larry Douglas is a better Lun Tha than Rueben Fuentes. Both can be found on the original broadway cast recording.
Nevertheless, this is still a five star recording. BUY IT!
