iTunes Review
The Knot is the second release by Wye Oak, the married duo of Andy Stack (drums, keyboards, vocals) and Jenn Wasner (guitars, vocals). It’s a carefully crafted and beautifully recorded album featuring inventive arrangements supported by lush and gauzy production. With the exception of the driving “Tattoo” the tempos range from slow (“For Prayer,” “I Want for Nothing,” “That I Do”) to slower (“Milk and Honey,” “Mary Is Mary,” “Sight, Flight”), yet the fluid dynamics and dramatic performances keep the songs moving forward. Tension built on organ fills, violin drones, or ringing pedal steel notes is released by noisy bursts of feedback, distorted guitars, drums, and vague electronic touches to create an ethereal atmosphere. This overall sonic richness especially suits the clear, honey-coated croon of Wasner, who does most of the singing here. Her lovely phrasing and sweetly understated delivery contributes much to the album’s warmth. The Knot is a gorgeous release from a young band to watch.
Customer Reviews
Wye Oak is one of the best bands you've (probably) never heard
I saw Jen and Andy play in Spearfish, South Dakota in someone's back yard. They took the green and red lit natural rockery stage after dusk, cranked up their amps, and blew us away. They were touring on the If Children record but played many of the songs off of this record. 'For Prayer' was an instant favorite of mine, so much so that I couldn't wait for this record to come out. 'The Knot' is good, but 'The Knot' live is incredible. Go support this band if they come anywhere near you. I hope to see them back in our neck of the woods sooner than later.
Siamese
is a perfect song. Wye's female singer is very much in the stlyle of Kathleen Edwards.
Wye Oak rocks!!!
I known Andy since grade school and he was always the musician. I remember playing with him at his house in MD and listening to him wail on his drums. Even in high school he was the musical one playing with the steel drum band and rocking out with the few bands he played with during school. I knew he would always obtain his dream of be a traveling musician. His music reminds in some ways of Sonic Youth and is great live. I hope the best and Good luck, your band is awesome just keep producing great songs.
