Like Emmylou Harris and Steve Earle, Nanci Griffith has never been embraced by mainstream Nashville. In the long run, this has been a good thing, because all have remained true to their own sound, without consideration of compromise. Griffith has always been a more pristine folk-singer anyway, as this beautiful, understated album, one of her very best, indicates. Last of the True Believers is full of the cozy, delicate acoustic moments which Griffith gift-wraps for her listeners. And, like an oversized sweater, her listeners discover just how warm and welcoming these great songs can be. Key tracks: "Love at the Five and Dime," "Banks of the Pontchartrain," "Last of the True Believers"

Nanci Griffith's Best Album

This is the last, best, and most consistent of Griffith's early Philo albums. It has just enough pace and polish to be accessible to a wide audience, yet retains the unique, honest twangy-folk sound and sweet, clever, observant lyrics of the earlier albums like Light Beyond These Woods or Once in a Very Blue Moon. The best track is One of These Days, about an old couple in the city, still in love, fondly remembering their youth in the country. St. Olaf's Gate, Lookin' for the Time, Banks of the Pontchartrain, Fly By Night, and Love at the Five and Dime are also great. Anyone who's intrigued but unsatisfied by Griffith's recent albums should start with this one.

Wonderful Album

From start to finish this album is a gem. Beautiful, well-constructed songs: poignant without being pathetic. Banks of the Ponchartrain remains one of my all time favorite songs. For my money, this is Nanci Griffith's best album. Buy it. Learn the songs.

Last of the true believers

"Love At The Five And Dime" is the best song ever! Nanci has such a way with words, she evokes the sweetness of new love, the pain of betrayal,and the comfort of growing old together all in one sweet little song. I'll always want to "dance a little closer" every time I go into my corner drug store!
