Album Review

Alternative CCM group's depressing 1997 release with lyrics that suggest they're about a murder/suicide attempt. The actual goal of the album isn't quite clear, nor is there any indication whatsoever whether Chin is a real or fictional person. The pictures of an individual of Asian descent, presumably Chin, seem real enough. Neither liner notes nor the group's two main web sites offer any insight into the album's history or purpose. As a result, the listener is left entirely depressed and completely clueless as to what they were supposed to feel, if anything at all. It would probably be wiser to purchase one of the group's other albums as a starting point instead, since this one is so aimless. ~ Dacia A. Blodgett-Williams, Rovi

the early days

ok so i dont know about the album review up top. The reviewer trys to state "Chin" as a person. Well if they had done a little more research they would have found that before the Switchfoot the band, formed by jon foreman along with his brother Tim and drummer chad butler, was called Chin Up before the name change. Therefor I think that this album is a tribute to the begining of Switchfoot. As for the so called depressing music, this was released in the 90s, many band formed in the 90s had a grunge influence, this is where i think the the ditinctive sound comes from. To me this album isnt a story but a summary of the origin, there's not much of a linear pattern of meaning. I love this album and i think that all Switchfoot fans should own this to get a sense of how much the band has evloved in the little over a decade the have been filling our ears with music. So based on my own personal opinion and my own comparisson with other bands and singers of the current age i am gonna give this 5 stars. This is an album that will take over my top 25 played list while i anxiously wait for Vice Verses to hit the local Bull Moose Music in the summer of 2011.

5 Star

I own all the Switchfoot albums and have listened to them many a time. I consider this album to be no less good at all and enjoy it just as much as any of the other albums. It's really a great album with amazing lyrics and a different sound. A great buy to anyone who likes Switchfoot!

The first --and one of the best of their career.

The reviewer is overanalyzing this album. This remains one of my favorite albums of the CCM genre, b/c of its distinctive sound and catchy lyrics. It was produced in 1996-1997, so labeling this as 'depressing' is completely hollow, if not framed in the context of rock during that period. This album is solid. It's Switchfoot before the hype and overproduction. I still love their albums, but this is the album that started it all.

Chem6a, Concrete Girl and Don't Be There are my favorite tracks. The other songs are good, too.

Biography

Formed: 1996 in San Diego, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After gaining a foothold in the contemporary Christian music scene, Switchfoot went mainstream with 2003's The Beautiful Letdown, a double-platinum album that straddled the line between sacred and secular rock music. The band spent the rest of its career appealing to both camps. Years before Switchfoot's commercial breakthrough, though, the group struggled to make a dent in the San Diego area, where singer/guitarist Jonathan Foreman, bassist Tim Foreman, and drummer Chad Butler began playing together...
