The Fat Boys Deliver Again
With The Legend of Hard Corey Former Fat Boys go back to what they do best. Although I appreciate their remixes and political parodies, I want to hear movies, video games and comics. They definitely satisfy that here. The album is an eclectic and stimulating mix of themes, beats, rhymes and lyrics. Some of my favorites include "Cereal", "Junk Food" and Lucian's vocals on "You Can't Call" which provides a nice mix to the more intense styles of the Fat Boys. That said, you get a solid range from subjects concerning Scott Pilgrim, Beverly Cleary, Power Rangers, Star Wars and Zelda to relationships, messiness, sex and phones. What else would you expect from a group of white boys from the suburbs?
Exactly what I expected. Exactly what I wanted.
The music isn't far from the reality of these guys, which is what makes it so good. I guess it's a common and celebrated part of hip hop, and while some might consider their stuff to be a parody, I see it simply as a celebration of the form, and of their own experiences. I haven't lived as crazy a suburban life as these guys have, but it's fun to imagine doing so through their music.
And there's nothing like ending an album with a V chord, either. Ahh.
