iTunes Review

What constitutes the Lemonheads at this late date is essentially Evan Dando. The original members all fell away decades ago and for this “comeback” release Dando collaborates with bassist Karl Alvarez and producer-drummer Bill Stevenson of the southern Cali punk-pop groups, Descendents and All. And it all sounds exactly like what anyone versed in these groups would expect. The punk-pop of the mid-80s comes barreling through as if the whole ennui of ‘90s grunge and its ‘emo’ hangover never happened. Stevenson adds his trademarked clumsy, over-the-top drum rolls and stuttering beats. Dando sings in his weightless, casual manner. And the songs, ultimately catchy and easygoing, float past in agreeable cadence. Everything about Dando has always seemed so easy. Between his spacey personal demeanor and wind-blown good looks, he’s never been taken as seriously as those who make a point of carrying the world on their shoulders. But such concerns are immaterial when the tunes are as succinct and steamrolling as “Become the Enemy,” “Let’s Just Laugh” and “No Backbone,” which features a muted J Mascis on lead guitar.

They're back!

Most of us discovered the Lemonheads while listening to the grunge movement of the early '90s. They always were a happy light lift from the aggression of Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and STP. I'm thrilled to see Dando back. The record is what you'd expect; Light, tight and pleasing. As I get older the Lemonheads are played more and more and having new material is fantastic. Welcome back Lemonheads! We have something to smile about.

A Solid Return to True Form

When you’ve been away from the game for a while doing lord knows what, it’s good to come back guns-a-blazin’, armed with the pop-rock know-how that made you and indie rock god in the early 90s. Evan Dando is back and backed by the best rhythm section in the history of punk rock, Bill Stevenson (drums) and Karl Alvarez (bass) of Descendents fame. The result is a top-notch collection of songs that should easily placate Lemonhead fans of old and attract many new ones with just one listen. “Black Gown” and “Pittsburgh” let you know from the get-go that Dando is serious about his music again. Speaking of the past (and I do often), let’s just forget that Dando was the poster boy for the dreamy 90s alterna-rocker. And since we’re all about forgetting and forgiving, that cringe-inducing cover of “Mrs. Robinson” never existed, okay? We should remember that Dando, despite all his weirdness, unwashed good looks and substance problems, is a bona fide talent who pens simple yet clever pop songs and serves them up with the just right mixture of welcoming mellowness and wry menace. This new CD harkens back to the perkiness and sly humor of “It’s a Shame about Ray” and the fuzzy darkness of “Lovey,” still the best Lemonheads album to date. Please take a listen. A big thanks goes to the mighty J Mascis who was kind enough to add his other-wordly guitar chops to the magnificent “No Backbone.” Mascis, Stevenson, Alvarez and Dando all on one song? Hallelujah! That is a true “Super Group” for the ages (and no creepy, little, obsequious, sell-out Dave Navarro prancing about).

Great album, can't wait for the next one!

I liked this album on the first listen, and now I can't stop listening to it! I've played it about a dozen times already and it gets better every time! I haven't been able to listen to anything else since I bought it, that's how good it is! The sound is slightly different from The Lemonheads of the 90's, it's more upbeat and has more electric guitar. It's definitely one of Evan Dando's best albums yet. You MUST buy this album, you will be glad you did. Can't wait for the next one, Evan!

Biography

Formed: 1986 in Boston, MA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

The Lemonheads' evolution from post-Hüsker Dü hardcore punk rockers to teenage heartthrobs is one of the strangest sagas in alternative music. Initially, the group was a punk-pop trio formed by three teenage Boston suburbanites, but over the years, the band became a vehicle for Evan Dando. Blessed with good looks and a warm, sweet voice, Dando became a teen idol in the early '90s, when Nirvana's success made alternative bands commercially viable. While his simple, catchy songs were instantly accessible,...
