Album Review

The debut album by Portland, OR-based rapper Xile is militantly Christian hip-hop that posits both the rapper's faith and his career as some kind of war against an enemy that's never clearly defined, even on the most overtly militaristic tracks, like "PO Dubs." Musically, the album has the exquisitely arranged sound of a mainstream commercial hip-hop album in the Jay-Z mold, mixing snatches of orchestral samples, live percussion, and R&B diva hooks under Xile's strident vocals. The combination works more often than not, but as with every artist who mixes religion or politics into his music, Xile has willingly limited his audience to those who agree with him.

True Underground

What I find amazing is the willingness to dismiss Christ based music, whether Rock or Hip Hop for having a limited audience. Commercial music does seek that largest piece of the pie, that is it's very life line. Christian music can not depend on that, because of the very nature of the message. Those of us who know this live by that truth because Christ said it would be so. His message will never be accepted by the masses. I'd like to point out that the enemy that Xile has in his cross hairs is a lot clearer than the original reviewer tries to make it seem. It's a war that's certain. Call it evil, call it Satan. The enemy is what ever or who ever it is that tries to steal, cheat or rob you as an individual of living a life fully while on this planet. Xile's music, message and talent are very well rounded and an effective alternative to today's overly commercial trash that capitalizes on society's willingness to buy into the gangsta life style. His lyrics and rhymes are well layered. His voice and the musical tracks are cohesive and well produced. Yes some may disagree with the message, although it's hard to believe that trying to promote a positive influence on a lost world could be viewed as being a negative. Original rap tried to promote that same thing by bringing awareness to the inner city struggles. The difference is that the previous one dwelled on the situation and couldn't go any further because it depended too much on everyone coming together to achieve unity. Xile's music offers an honest plea to the listener, to conduct a personal inventory. Than it suggests a road map to a way out by requiring the action of the only one that matters, the listener. Whether a believer or not, young or old, do yourself a favor, listen to some of these tracks and allow the challenge to be answered.
