Album Review

Like Norah Jones, Erin Bode is a sweet-voiced singer with a jazz background and a healthy disregard for musical boundaries. Also like Jones, she gravitates towards quiet, gentle, straightforwardly melodic fare. On The Little Garden she continues her songwriting collaboration with bandmember and multi-instrumentalist Adam Maness, and the result is a bit more mixed than their previous work has been. It may be the deepening of their skill and their musical relationship, but their songs are getting more and more subtle as time goes on — sometimes a bit too subtle. "New England Friends" is a charming and deeply felt song, but as it progresses you start to get the feeling that it's more about the words than the music (a tendency that we critics refer to as the Elvis Costello Disease); "Two" also feels a bit flat and uneventful, melodically speaking, and "Out of Time" spends way too much time on a two-chord vamp. But the rest of the album moves from strength to strength: "Sweater Song" is sad and heartrendingly lovely; "Sydney Come Down" rocks out gorgeously; "It's All Your Fault" is both witty and soulful, with a brilliant horn chart. And Bode's jazzy take on the Paul Simon song "Born at the Right Time" is a gem. Throughout the album, her voice is a complete joy, and redeems even the songs that are least interesting otherwise.

Their Finest Work Yet

"The Little Garden" is by far the best recording that Erin Bode & her band have put out. Adam's work on the keys & guitar are outstanding; Syd's basslines continue to provide a strong melodic foundation; and Derek's drums/percussion are phenomenal. It comes across like an extension of the ideas they explored on "Over and Over," but the instrumentation, arrangements & execution of the songs are more developed. The whole album carries a great vibe that tips its hat to a lot of different influences: folk, R&B, jazz, and 1970s mellow singer-songwriter rock. If you're a Midwesterner, check out their live show if you can (they're from St. Louis and play there as well as the KC area) before their career takes off on this record! I'd recommend buying this album first, and working your way backwards through the others in the catalogue.

a testament to talent and tenacity...

the first time i heard erin bode sing was in a barnes & noble book shoppe in saint louis, mo on a cold rainy day, fall of 2000. i have been a fan ever since. but, anyone who has seen her live knows it's pointless to resist her vocal charms. she is a long term, slow burn talent, always open to new listeners while surprising long-time fans. her interpretations of other's songs have always drawn an attentive audience, but it is thru her original work that she will endure as an artist. each of her professional releases has moved her closer to her true north as a singer/songwriter.   stand out tracks here include, "sydney come down", with its longing chorus hook building with such tasteful crescendo on record that it demands a live release that i suspect would clock in at at least 10 minutes. the lyrically engaging, "fences"  features an gorgeous string accompaniment recalling, paul simon's, "'rene and georgette magritte with their dog after the war" and bourgeois tagg's, "i don't mind at all". both "the cold water" and "the little garden" will move you to purchase the full release after simply previewing their 30 second samples. the vocal work on both these tracks is especially endearing as layers of her vocal harmonies draw in the listener and propel the lyric's stories. erin bode has clearly moved on from the jazz genre that brought her to recorded music into an exciting arena of new sounds all her own while tying colorful threads to material close to her heart. this little garden has been tended to with care and attention to detail. instrumentation by her world class band is surprising, selective and ever-tasteful. the production work here is top notch and the mix is uncluttered and clean. she and her co-creators have handcrafted a small world here that is a rare find and a wonder to discover.

angelic voice & great songwriting

We get to see some different moods in Erin Bode's voice on this CD. Hummable melodies abound - personal faves are "New England Friends", a cover of Paul Simon's "Born At the Right Time" and "Sydney Come Down." The Erin Bode Group is a St. Louis favorite that definitely deserves greater national/international attention!
