Album Review

The Look found Shalamar incorporating elements of new wave pop into their stylized dance funk, as demonstrated by such glossy pop-funk as "Dead Giveaway" and "No Limits (The Now Club)." The sound is appealing on such uptempo numbers, but the ballads are slightly weaker, lacking strong, memorable hooks. Similarly, the funk numbers tend to blend together after certain point, but The Look remains an entertaining artifact of its era.

They have "THE LOOK " and "the sound" to match for a great album!!

This is a bitterwsweet album since group veterans, Jody Watley and Jeffrey Daniel were in the process of leaving Shalamar due to creative differences with Dick Griffey and Howard Hewitt, but this album has some strength with the production of Leon Sylvers III. My favorite songs are "Dead Giveaway", "Closer", "You Won't Miss Love (Till It's Gone)", and "Over & Over!" The former and the latter were R&B hits for the group! "Dissappearing Act" was electrifying and "Right Here" was very smooth! Like their previous album, The Look is flawless and any New Wave and/or R&B fan should get this whole album. This is also one of the first albums that Leon produced of which he took his new sound to a new galaxy (dropping disco and moving on to harder edge new wave soul). For example, he and his brother Foster Sylvers did a test drive on Janet Jackson's "Come Give Your Love To Me" on her debut album the previous year and it passed! Why not do it for one of the most successful R&B groups of the early 1980's?! They have "the look" and "the sound" to match!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is by far the best album by Shalamar. "Dead Giveaway" still sounds as good as ever. Jody Watley is fabulous on the balads.

Bringing back memories of the wild 80's

I remember buying this on vinyl back in the day. I can't believe that it is now available for download in iTunes. I had to get it right away! This album brings back memories of clubbing in NYC and MTV when all they played was videos. "Dead Giveaway" had a way cool video to go with the song.

Shalamar was the creation of Dick Griffey, the booking agent for the television R&B program Soul Train, and British R&B producer Simon Soussan. The group's first single, the 1977 Motown medley "Uptown Festival," featured a bevy of faceless studio musicians; once it became a hit, Griffey decided...
