Great album!
Fredrick Kaufman's music is of an astonishing expressive power. The pieces featured in this album reveal Kaufman's all-embracing approach to composition and display his mastery at a variety of genres and compositional techniques. "Urban" String Quartet exemplifies this well: from the Bartok-esque contrapuntal textures of the middle section to a quasi-minimalist ending, it is not one bit dull. This work ravishes the listener with its imaginative treatment of the ensemble (using both traditional and avant-garde instrumental techniques), beautiful melodic lines and a flawless musical form. “Bud for Bloom,” a piece written for oboist Sarah Lambert Bloom, successfully combines impressionist harmonies with jazz-influenced rhythms, all done with impeccable taste. “Ying and Yang,” a brief but breathtaking tour-de-force for the two pianists, shows Kaufman's unique and ingenious treatment of the twelve-tone technique. "Meditation for a Lonely Flute," written for the famous flutist Julius Baker, is an introspective work full of exquisite colors where every pitch seems very carefully chosen. Kaufman’s “Kaminarimon” is a successful fusion between Flamenco dancing and Japanese traditional music (via Taiko drumming). Both sound worlds are beautifully interwoven, resulting in an exciting piece that has both introverted and extroverted facets. This compilation finishes with two of Fredrick Kaufman’s finest solo instrumental works: “Wild Wind,” dedicated to Henri Bok, and “Inner Sanctum,” a piece that deserves to be rated as one of the 20th-century's best solo cello pieces. The former draws from the same type of idea underpinning Berio’s Sequenzas, that is, a work freely built over distinct motivic fragments. In the latter, a passionate and touching monologue brilliantly written for the cello, is where Kaufman’s Jewish background is most present, as demonstrated by some of its almost cantor-like melodic lines. Performances are startling, the highlights being the Amernet Quartet, Henri Bok, and Andres Diaz.
Great stuff! What imagination...
I love this composer!
