iTunes Review

Singer/songwriter John Mark McMillan follows in the footsteps of such eloquent Christian rock pioneers as Keith Green and Mark Heard in these visionary songs, filling his lyrics with vivid, almost surreal images of suffering and resurrection. Those who know McMillan as the writer of “How He Loves” (popularized by the David Crowder Band) will find the artist’s own recorded work to be unexpectedly broad in sound and diverse in approach. Songs like “Skeleton Bones,” “Carbon Ribs” and “Belly of the Lion” have a cinematic quality in their depiction of broken urban landscapes, lost highways and desperate souls waiting for salvation. The epochal “Reckoning Day” is a particularly compelling portrait of a coming Rapture amidst the chaos of modern America. “Philadelphia” and “Carolina Tide” capture a small-town Southern ambiance through their telling lyric details and bluesy shadings. Straight-ahead worship tunes like “My Only” are delivered with a disarming sincerity and humble strength. By turns quirky, startling and inspirational, The Medicine is a potent tonic for the spirit.

Just get it!

You'll know from the previews... this is music that didn't go through the ccm "machine". Glad Integrity didn't try and change it. it's honest and raw and AWESOME!

southern grease and spiritual potency

like a sage with a pan of cornbread, john mark is a great example of southern infused grit as it meets the issues of life, love, and god. dig it. been listening to it and love it.

Second Coming of Rich Mullins/Keith Green?

JMM is a songwriter that says things that I don't understand.... and that's a good thing. There is something very deep and satisfying with every tune. I have been waiting a long time for someone to say something in a honest way in "Christian" music and Medicine is beginning to say it. It's not perfect, there are plenty of moments that seem to be birthed out of a rebellion and leave me more depressed and pissed. There are times, where simplicity is avoided for the sake of something "indie" sounding. There is nothing remotely fun or light hearted in the songs, but it certainly balances out the cheese everyone else is offering. This is the kind of music that requires a response.

There are plenty of Christian artists that simply find their voice by criticizing the church, this album doesn't really do that. It makes my faith seem like a serious thing and convicts me to find a deeper devotion. The same thing happens when I listen to Keith Green or Rich Mullins... i believe that they are saying something that is very important for me to hear. There is something eerily similar about JMM. It's just been so long that I have lost faith in this art form of Christian Music. Medicine is bringing me back to the table....
