A brief history lesson...

I've been waiting for this day for a LONG time... so here goes. Firstly - to ALL reviewers and so-called "fans"... Metallica has been more influential & more original in the last 25 years (yes they have been around that long) than just about ANY band in history. Their recent induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (on their first ballot/attempt no less) is a testament to that. More importantly, ANY group of monkeys can stand on stage or in a studio and do the same things for 2 hours or 10 years - see Britney Spears or any so-called rap act of the last ten years as proof of this. Metallica has EVOLVED over the last 25 years - more than some of us can say... and better yet - they've done it on THEIR terms. As a true DIE-HARD fan (yes I can say that as I'm one of only a few fans left that actually saw Cliff Burton (R.I.P. brother - see ya when I get there) live before he died), I feel qualified to write this review - hopefully it will help those who are looking for a gift or someone from a new generation of fans. I'll go in album order so as to make it somewhat easier (hopefully). Kill 'Em All - the band's first album. Very raw sound - Metallica without the polish of today. 4 stars - best tracks are Seek, Horsemen, and Anesthesia (REQUIRED learning for bass players). Ride the Lightning - a little more polished, but still raw. 4 stars - best tracks are Fade, Creeping Death, and For Whom the Bell Tolls (still my personal fave). Master of Puppets - Metallica's masterwork. There's a reason this album is in the Smithsonian. 5 stars - every track here is amazing; the standout is Orion (now universally acknowledged as a tribute to the late Cliff Burton). And Justice For All - a very sad and angry album. Band was grieving for Cliff and it shows. 4 stars - standouts are One, Harvester and Live Is to Die (last song Cliff wrote). Metallica (the Black Album) - the quintessential Metallica album. The one album that EVERYONE knows something about. 5 stars. Standouts - Sad, Unforgiven, and God. (though like Puppets, every track here is great). Load - where Metallica "changed". Say what you will - listen to it ALL before you decide anything. 4 stars. Standouts - King Nothing, Ronnie, and Mama. ReLoad - further "change". See review of Load. 4 stars. Standouts - Fuel, Devil's Dance, and Low Man's Lyric. Garage Inc. - a 2-disc Metallica history lesson. 5 stars. Standouts - Turn the Page, Die Die, Whiskey, and the entire 2nd disc. S&M - live Metallica with a 108-piece world-renowned orchestra behind them. I was fortunate enough to be there both nights - hands-down the best concert I've ever seen from anyone. 7 stars. Standouts - Ktulu, Nothing Else Matters, and Bells. St. Anger - the album that most "fans" hate. They made this album for themselves as therapy - for them and no one else. Hard to listen to in one sitting. 3 stars. Standouts - St. Anger, The Unnamed Feeling, and Invisible Kid. Death Magnetic - their best since "Puppets". 5 stars. Standouts - Nightmare, Cyanide, and Unforgiven III (piano on a Metallica song ?!?!) Though like Puppets - EVERY track here is AMAZING. Hope this helps.

Metallica: God's Thrashing, Powerful, Epic Gift to your ears

Metallica. A band with so much too them...it's nearly impossible to explain without some sort of a biography. Metallica came around in a time when rock was dying, & what was left of it was becoming purely about making songs about sex & partying. Metallica came in & gave that oversexualized crap a nice kick in the crotch, with their hard, heavy, relentless assaulting music, unrivaled energy, incredible riffs, & complex lyrics of the likes of which the world had never seen before. Heavier than anything before them, backed by powerful riffs & lyrics unlike anything before them. They would go on an epic quest 'to take over the world' as drummer Lars Ulrich put it, & explore such dark subjects as pain, anger social & political injustices, anger, & depression so smartly & with so much relentless energy that by the time you finished the 1st song, you'd probablly need to have at least a dozen 8 hour energy drinks. I know I did after hearing 'Blackened's' relentless assault from the "...And Justice For All" disc I got for my 11th birthday. That was the 1st Metallica song I heard. It was a beast. A beast that was unlike anything I had heard before. That beast is Metallica, and that beast is dark [The Four Horsemen, ...And Justice For All, Disposable Heroes, Cyanide] & powerful [Whiplash, Trapped Under Ice, Leper Messiah, Dyers Eve]. However, it isn't afraid to be light [Fade to Black, The Struggle Within, Cure, The Memory Remains] or soft [The Unforgiven I, II, & III, Bleeding Me]. It is fast & furious [Seek & Destroy, Fight Fire with Fire, Battery, All Nightmare Long]. It is also slow & steady [For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Thing That Should Not Be, Don't Tread on Me, Mama Said]. It has got deep lyrical meanings [Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Blackened, The God That Failed], along with intense instrumentals [(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, The Call of Ktulu, To Live is To Die, Suicide & Redemption]. Metallica can go virtually any which way it wants-and end out being extremely sucessful at it. Now on to what to buy. Okay. Let's start off with a warning for diehard Metallica fans: This is aimed for those just getting into Metallica, those lightly into Metallica, and those who want to get into Metallica, so if you disagree with me or think I could have chosen a better, it's because I'm not aiming at you [or even me]. I'm just picking the songs that'll get these new Metallica fans into the obssession with us. I'm going to choose a variety of Metallica songs so the chances of them getting addicted increases, m'kay? So if there's 1 Load, Reload, or St. Anger song, chill. It's only 1, & just that. With that said, for starters I recommend the following actions & suggestions [I'll limit both to just 12 great songs]: Absolute Must Buys [to get addicted to immediately]: Whiplash, Fade to Black, Creeping Death, Battery, Master of Puppets, Blackened, One, Enter Sandman, The Unforgiven, Fuel, Am I Evil?, Cyanide. Absolute Must Hears [so you can get addicted to soon]: Seek & Destroy, Fight Fire With Fire, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), ...And Justice For All, Dyers Eve, Don't Tread On Me, King Nothing, The Memory Remains, Sabbra Cadabra, Dirty Window, The Judas Kiss. Absolute Must Check-Outs [to get addicted to later]: Motorbreath, Seek & Destroy, Metal Militia, Ride the Lightning, Trapped Under Ice, Disposable Heroes, Leper Messiah, Eye of the Beholder, Shortest Straw, To Live Is to Die, Frantic, My Apocalypse. Basically after you [newcomers to Metallica] deceide you 'really like' Metallica [since we all know you will], I would suggest you buy their first 5 albums [along with 'S&M,' 'Garage Inc.,' & 'Death Magnetic'-which seperate would cost more than this entire pack], especially 'Puppets,' 'Justice,' and 'the Black Album'. At Once you get into those, definitely check out 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Kill 'Em All,' and lastly 'Death Magentic,' & hopefully later S&M and Garage Inc'-which cost more seperate than this entire pack. So it's like you're buying all that, but with 'Load,' as a free gift [not that you needed 'Load'... >_>] Basically just get what you like the most so you can get into the epic livestyle that is Metallica. Trust me-you won't be disappointed. I've beem addicted since I first popped in my disc of 'Justice' at the age of 11, & boy does it ROCK!

Excellent collection, but...

#1: Not a complete set, where is "Live S*** Binge and Purge"? #2 If you're really a fan of Metallica's you should already own their cd's.

Biography

Formed: 1981 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Metallica was easily the best, most influential heavy metal band of the '80s. Responsible for bringing the genre back to Earth, the bandmates looked and talked like they were from the street, shunning the usual rockstar games of metal musicians during the early '80s. Metallica also expanded the limits of thrash, using speed and volume not for their own sake, but to enhance their intricately structured compositions. The release of 1983's Kill 'Em All marked the beginning of the legitimization of heavy...
