iTunes Review

Yellow Ostrich began as one-man-band project by Alex Schaaf, a prolific home recorder who released three EPs and a different version of The Mistress online in 2010. On the strength of that work he was picked up by Barsuk Records who then released this remastered version of The Mistress complete with added tracks. Schaaf’s clever use of vocals is the defining element on this endearing album. He harmonizes with himself using a cappella loops and adds texture and rhythm with layers of vocal sounds, an idea that yields some surprising and spectacular results. The novelty would probably wear off soon if not for his catchy melodies and obvious knack for song structure and arrangement. He experiments, but in a low-key way that keeps the songs loose and fun. From the first track you can’t help but hum along. Though most of the music was created by Schaaf, he is joined by Jon Natchez (bass, horns) and Michael Tapper (drums), two talented musicians that make valuable contributions to the album as a whole. Infused with a DIY spirit and contagious enthusiasm, The Mistress is a rewarding listen.
