Without Sennett's riff the rating would be less

I must say, this is my favorite band's worst song. Rilo Kiley has always been an energized group, full with amazing sounds, and even more amazing vocals by their leading lady, Jenny Lewis. The Moneymaker, the new and first single off their soon to be released Under the Blacklight, seems to be a step down from what a normal fan would expect. It has been said The Moneymaker isn't the best song to show a non-Rilo fan, and it's true. Rilo Kiley has three main elements: Lewis's sexy but cute vocals, Blake Sennett's awesome guitar riffs and the lyrics these two write (which are catchy and singable, you will never fail to get an RK song stuck in your head). Add in Pierre de Reeder's bass beats and Jason Boesel rockin' on the drumbs and you've got a helluva group. But with this new single, that first element is missing. Lewis's voice is different in a way I can't explain right now. It almost sounds forced, and as if she's angry, and this isn't the typically normal song to be angry at. It shows the smutty lifestyle of stars of the pornography film industry, which could explain the lyrics (or lack of) and the way the song is put together as a whole. Long story short: Sennett's riffs shine while Jenny's voice dims. It is usually an equal balance. Not with The Moneymaker. But maybe this is the new direction RK is taking. Or maybe the song itself is a 'moneymaker' and will be the most successful of all the new songs on Under The Blacklight, being the most unorthodox Rilo Kiley-esque song. Maybe that's what's going on. Rilo Kiley is being something they're not for one song to prove what the song is about: being exploited by being something you're usually not. But who knows.

The Currency Cave

I have to admit, I didn't expect this -- which is exactly why I like it. This song coming from someone else might not register a blip on the radar, but the fact that it's such a departure from Rilo's normal style(s), and surely done with tongue at least halfway in cheek, amuses me. Jenny has never let me down, so if she's driving, I'm calling shotgun. Let us do this thing.

I heart RK like Whoa.

I think for now its a shock to some people who are use to their old sound. Yes...it gives one the feeling of "SELLOUT!" But, come on girls and guys its jenny, Blake, Pierre, and Jason....they are full of talent and trust me Jenny knows what she is doing. She of all people is not going to go greedy for money. Trust me. Give it a chance because they are probably the best band out there.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Like their West Coast contemporaries in Death Cab for Cutie, Rilo Kiley steadily gained traction in indie pop circles throughout the late '90s and early 2000s before the record industry (and public at large) officially took note. Led by former child actors Jenny Lewis (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Blake Sennett (guitar, vocals), the L.A.-based quartet held its first practice in 1998. Bassist Pierre de Reeder and drummer Dave Brock (later replaced by ex-Foundation Lassie member Jason Boesel) completed...
