Not Just a Kid Anymore
This album emerges one of the best singer/songwriter albums of the year. Andrew masterfully crafts his lyrics--moving in on the sparse details of sometimes fictional lives, then zooming out again to reveal universal transcendent truths about his subject. In Early in the Morning, we learn about his neighbors' lives, then the answer to why their seemingly mundane existence matters. This songwriter obviously has filled his head with imagery from mid-twentieth century fiction writers such as Hemingway and Steinbeck. The attention to detail is a dead giveaway. Specifics about characters become shorthand for the whole. Osenga also provides a welcomed variation of emotion throughout the album. He alternates from sparse keyboard-based vignettes to epic rock anthems with ease. Buy this album now, and spread the word to others. You won't regret it. I anticipate even greater work in the future.
In Fine Form
While "The Morning" is stylistically different than Osenga's two previous solo albums, it is similarly refreshing because his writing hasn't changed a great deal. Osenga tells a good story and paints a clear picture with his words. But then there are his melodies that are like the finishing strokes which make his work unforgettable. For example, "Farmer's Wife," though only slightly longer than the one-minute mark, ends with instrumentation and a melody that make it one of my favorites. With all of "The Morning," Osenga is in fine form.
"The Morning" = Amazing
I'm not much with words, so I won't try too hard. What you need to know about this CD is that Osenga poured himself into it, and the result is simply amazing. Sonically and lyrically it is one of the best CDs in my (pretty large) collection. $0.99 per song is a steal.
